7.4 Magnitude Earthquake Triggers Tsunami Waves in Northern Japan, Evacuations Ordered

A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck northern Japan on Monday, triggering tsunami waves and prompting emergency warnings across coastal regions, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

Tsunami Waves Hit Iwate Coast

An 80-centimetre tsunami wave was recorded at Kuji port in Iwate Prefecture at around 5:34 pm local time. Earlier, a 70-centimetre wave had already struck the same area, while a smaller 40-centimetre wave was observed at another port in the region.

Authorities had initially warned that tsunami waves of up to 3 metres could hit parts of Iwate and Hokkaido. Warnings were also issued for Aomori Prefecture, while advisories were extended to Miyagi Prefecture and Fukushima Prefecture.

Earthquake Origin and Impact

The earthquake occurred off the Sanriku coast in northern Japan at approximately 4:53 pm local time. According to JMA, the quake originated beneath the Pacific Ocean at a relatively shallow depth, intensifying its impact.

The tremor registered an “upper 5” on Japan’s seismic intensity scale—strong enough to make movement difficult and cause structural concerns in affected areas.

Emergency Response and Evacuations

Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi announced the formation of an emergency task force and urged residents in coastal zones to evacuate immediately to higher ground.

Emergency services were placed on high alert as authorities assessed potential damage and monitored further tsunami activity. Visuals broadcast by NHK showed ships moving away from ports such as Hachinohe, with urgent evacuation alerts displayed.

Transport and Services Disrupted

Bullet train services in Aomori were temporarily suspended following the quake, reflecting the widespread impact on infrastructure and transportation networks.

Japan’s Seismic Vulnerability

Japan remains one of the most earthquake-prone nations due to its location along the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a zone known for intense seismic and volcanic activity. The country experiences frequent tremors, accounting for nearly 20% of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6.0 and above.

Situation Under Watch

While the tsunami waves recorded so far have remained below the initially feared levels, authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. Residents have been advised to stay alert and follow official guidance as aftershocks and additional waves cannot be ruled out.
