Tensions between Iran and the United States have intensified following reports of a military confrontation in the Sea of Oman, raising fresh concerns over maritime security in one of the world’s most critical energy corridors.
According to reports cited by Al Jazeera and Iranian media, Iranian forces launched drones toward US warships after an alleged attack on an Iranian commercial vessel. The incident comes amid an already fragile ceasefire and rising hostilities linked to control over regional shipping routes.
Conflicting Claims Over Maritime Incident
Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed that US forces attempted to target an Iranian merchant vessel operating in the Sea of Oman. Iranian state-linked outlets reported that the action was aimed at forcing the ship back into Iranian territorial waters.
Tehran further asserted that its naval units responded swiftly, compelling US forces to retreat from the area. The incident reportedly occurred against the backdrop of heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil and gas shipments.
On the other hand, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated that American forces intercepted and disabled an Iranian-flagged vessel after it allegedly violated a naval blockade. According to the US account, the destroyer USS Spruance fired warning shots and later targeted the vessel’s engine room before boarding it.
Strait of Hormuz at the Centre of Crisis
The Strait of Hormuz, through which nearly one-fifth of global oil supply passes, has once again become a flashpoint. Iran has reportedly imposed restrictions on shipping in response to what it describes as continued US blockade measures on its ports.
Iranian authorities also claimed they intercepted and turned back foreign oil tankers in the strait, signaling tighter control over maritime movement. The situation has disrupted normal shipping activity and raised alarms in global energy markets.
Ceasefire Under Strain
The latest developments come despite a ceasefire announced earlier this month by Donald Trump. Iranian officials have accused the US of violating ceasefire conditions by continuing naval operations and enforcing restrictions on Iranian vessels.
In response, Iran warned of possible retaliation, with its military leadership accusing Washington of “maritime aggression” and “piracy.”
