Indian Railways to Run 18,262 Summer Special Train Trips to Ease Peak Travel Rush

In a major step to handle the surge in summer travel demand, Indian Railways has announced the operation of 18,262 summer special train trips between April 15 and July 15, 2026. The large-scale initiative aims to provide smoother, more accessible, and comfortable journeys for millions of passengers during the peak vacation season.

Massive Capacity Expansion

As part of the plan, a total of 908 summer special trains have been approved across the country. Out of these, 660 trains—covering 11,294 trips—have already been notified, allowing passengers to plan and book their journeys well in advance.

The move comes in response to the seasonal spike in travel due to school holidays, festivals, and increased inter-city movement.

Key Railway Zones Driving the Initiative

Several major railway zones are playing a leading role in executing this expansion:

  • Central Railway: 3,082 trips (74 approved; 70 notified)
  • East Central Railway: 2,711 trips (64 approved; 38 notified)
  • North Western Railway: 2,245 trips (76 approved; 62 notified)

Other zones have also significantly boosted operations:

  • Western Railway: 2,078 trips
  • Northern Railway: 2,090 trips
  • South Central Railway: 1,184 trips
  • North Central Railway: 1,163 trips

Additionally, zones such as East Coast Railway, Southern Railway, and South Western Railway are contributing to ensure wider regional connectivity.

Focus on Nationwide Connectivity

The summer special trains will run on high-demand routes connecting major cities, tourist destinations, and regional hubs. This nationwide deployment is designed to:

  • Reduce congestion on regular trains
  • Distribute passenger traffic more evenly
  • Improve connectivity to remote and underserved regions

Passenger Benefits

The initiative is expected to provide significant relief to travellers, including:

  • Lower waiting list pressure
  • Better chances of confirmed tickets
  • Increased availability of berths
  • More flexible travel options

With enhanced capacity, passengers are likely to experience smoother and more comfortable journeys during the busy summer months.

Strategic Planning for Peak Season

By announcing and notifying a large number of trains in advance, Indian Railways aims to improve booking convenience, streamline operations, and manage crowds more efficiently.

With over 18,000 trips planned within three months, this marks one of the most extensive seasonal expansions by Indian Railways in recent years. The initiative reinforces its role as the backbone of mass transportation in India, especially during high-demand travel periods.
