IMD Issues Red Alert for Odisha as Thunderstorms, Hailstorms and Heavy Rain Set to Batter State for Five Days

Odisha is bracing for a prolonged spell of severe weather, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing Red, Orange and Yellow warnings for multiple districts over the next five days. The forecast predicts widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms and strong gusty winds, with southern, interior and northern districts expected to face the most intense weather conditions.

Authorities have advised residents to remain alert as thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain and high-speed winds could disrupt normal life, damage crops and affect transportation in several parts of the state.

June 1: Red Alert Issued for Kandhamal and Gajapati

The IMD has placed Kandhamal and Gajapati districts under a Red Warning, forecasting severe thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, heavy rainfall, hailstorms and gusty surface winds reaching speeds of 60–70 kmph.

IMD Safety Advisory

The weather department has urged residents to take necessary precautions during the forecast period.

During Thunderstorms:

  • Avoid taking shelter under trees.

  • Do not enter rivers, ponds or other water bodies during lightning activity.
  • Disconnect electrical appliances during severe weather.
