For the first time, the Council of Higher Secondary Education will conduct a Higher Secondary Improvement Examination, allowing Class XII state board students to improve their grades in a single subject.
The newly introduced examination will be held simultaneously with the annual Instant Examination on July 3 and 4.
According to the official notification issued by CHSE, candidates appearing for the Improvement Examination will have to pay a registration fee of Rs 800, while the fee for the Instant Examination has been fixed at Rs 600.
Eligibility Criteria Explained
The council has introduced separate eligibility norms for the two examinations based on students’ academic status.
Improvement Examination
Regular students from the 2024–25 academic session belonging to Arts, Commerce, Science and Vocational streams, along with Distance Education students who have already passed the annual board examination, will be eligible to appear.
Candidates can take the examination in one theory paper from any compulsory, elective or trade subject to improve their marks.
Instant Examination
The Instant Examination will continue to benefit students who failed in only one subject.
Students securing pass marks and an aggregate of at least 210 marks, but failing or remaining absent in a single theory or practical paper, can appear for the exam.
Major Relief For Students
The new system is expected to provide greater academic flexibility for students.
While the Improvement Examination gives successful candidates an opportunity to enhance their performance and improve future academic prospects, the Instant Examination continues to help students avoid losing an academic year due to failure in one subject.
The move is being viewed as a significant reform in Odisha’s higher secondary examination system aimed at supporting student progression and academic improvement.
