In a major political development, senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari was on Friday unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislative Party in West Bengal, clearing the way for him to become the state’s next Chief Minister.
The announcement was made by Amit Shah, who had been appointed as the BJP’s central observer for the legislature party meeting.
“I announce the name of Suvendu Adhikari as the elected leader of the West Bengal BJP Legislative Party,” Shah said after the meeting in Kolkata.
Historic shift in Bengal politics
Adhikari’s election marks a landmark moment in the political history of West Bengal, with the Bharatiya Janata Party set to form its first government in the state.
The BJP secured a decisive mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections, ending 15 years of rule by the All India Trinamool Congress and reshaping Bengal’s political landscape.
Key architect of BJP’s Bengal breakthrough
A prominent face of the BJP in Bengal, Suvendu Adhikari played a central role in the party’s campaign and emerged as the frontrunner for the top post after the election results.
His elevation is being seen as a strategic choice by the party leadership, reflecting his growing influence in the state’s politics and his role in consolidating the BJP’s support base across Bengal.
Oath ceremony expected shortly
With his election as legislature party leader, Adhikari is now expected to formally stake claim to form the government. Reports indicate that the swearing-in ceremony is likely to take place on May 9 in Kolkata.
His appointment signals the beginning of a new political chapter in West Bengal, where the BJP is preparing to assume power for the first time.
