A low pressure area is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal around May 12 or 13, with the India Meteorological Department indicating that the developing weather system could trigger fresh rainfall activity across Odisha.
According to the weather department, a cyclonic circulation has formed over the South Andaman Sea and currently extends up to 1.5 km above mean sea level. Meteorologists expect the system to gradually strengthen over the next few days before consolidating into a low pressure area.
Possibility of further intensification
The India Meteorological Department has also indicated that the weather system may intensify further after the low pressure forms, with the possibility of developing into a depression.
However, the department clarified that the likelihood of the system turning into a cyclone remains low at this stage.
Weather experts are closely tracking the movement, intensity and atmospheric conditions over the eastern coast as the pre-monsoon pattern remains active over the region.
Yellow warning for all 30 districts of Odisha
Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has issued a yellow warning for all 30 districts of Odisha in view of likely rainfall accompanied by thunder and lightning.
On Saturday, thunderstorm activity with rainfall has been forecast for 20 districts of the state.
Officials said the prevailing weather conditions may lead to intermittent showers, lightning and gusty winds in several parts of Odisha over the coming days.
Pre-monsoon activity continues
The possible formation of the low pressure system comes amid ongoing pre-monsoon weather activity across eastern India.
Over the past several days, several districts in Odisha have already been witnessing Kalbaisakhi-related rain and thunderstorm activity, bringing temporary relief from rising temperatures.
Meteorologists said the evolution of the low pressure area over the Bay of Bengal will become clearer once the system strengthens further around May 12–13.
