Rath Yatra Preparations Gain Pace as Chariot Construction Advances in Puri

Preparations for the world-renowned Rath Yatra are gathering pace in Puri, with the construction of the three ceremonial chariots progressing steadily near the sacred Jagannath Temple.

Temple sources said the annual chariot-building work is moving forward in accordance with centuries-old rituals, with servitors and artisans working meticulously to ensure every component is crafted as per tradition.

18 wheels completed for the three chariots

As part of the elaborate construction process, 18 wheels for the three giant chariots have already been completed.

Every year, the building of the chariots marks one of the most significant phases leading up to Rath Yatra, as each structure is constructed afresh using traditional methods and sacred wood.

The work is being carried out at the designated chariot construction yard, where the atmosphere has turned increasingly festive as the date of the grand procession draws closer.

Intricate wood carving by Rupakar servitors

On Friday, the Rupakar servitors continued detailed carving work on 11 sal wood blocks for each of the three chariots.

The artisans are currently sculpting Narasimha figures onto the wooden panels — a decorative and spiritually significant feature of the chariots.

These carvings are regarded as an important expression of Odisha’s traditional temple craftsmanship and are closely associated with the heritage of the annual festival.

Blacksmiths forge crucial iron components

Alongside the carpentry work, activity has also intensified at the temporary blacksmith workshop.

The Ojha Kamar servitors are engaged in forging key iron components essential for assembling the giant wooden chariots.

Among the major components being prepared are pandari, tumb bala, ar kanta and pandari chabi.

These iron fittings play a critical role in reinforcing the structural framework of the chariots and ensuring their stability during the grand procession.

Rituals and traditions strictly followed

Temple officials said all construction activities are being supervised by designated servitors while strictly adhering to traditional customs and prescribed rituals that have been followed for generations.

Every stage of the work — from wood selection to carving and metal fitting — is carried out according to long-established temple practices.

Devotee anticipation rises

Rath Yatra is one of India’s most revered religious festivals, drawing lakhs of devotees from across the country and abroad every year.

The festival marks the ceremonial journey of Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra from the Jagannath Temple through the streets of Puri.

With construction progressing steadily, anticipation is steadily building among devotees awaiting one of the most iconic spiritual events in India.
