Odisha Weather Alert: IMD Issues Thunderstorm, Hail and Heavy Rain Warnings Across Several Districts

A developing weather system over Odisha is expected to trigger widespread rain and thunderstorm activity over the next two days, with the India Meteorological Department issuing orange and yellow warnings for multiple districts.

According to the IMD, an upper air cyclonic circulation has formed over the interior parts of Odisha at about 0.9 km above mean sea level. The system is likely to generate light to moderate rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, heavy showers and gusty surface winds in several parts of the state.

Day 1 Forecast: Valid till 8:30 AM, May 5

Light to moderate rain or thunderstorms are likely at several places across Odisha.

Orange warning has been issued for districts including Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Kandhamal, Ganjam and Gajapati.

These districts may witness thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, hail, heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph.

A yellow warning has been issued for Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha and Nayagarh, where wind speeds may reach 40 to 50 kmph, especially during afternoon and evening hours.

Meanwhile, moderate thunderstorm activity with wind speeds of 30 to 40 kmph is also likely in districts such as Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Deogarh, Angul, Dhenkanal, Sonepur, Boudh, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi and Nabarangpur.

Day 2 Forecast: Valid from 8:30 AM, May 5 to 8:30 AM, May 6

The weather activity is expected to continue across Odisha with rain and thunderstorms at several places.

An orange warning has been issued for Sambalpur, Angul, Keonjhar, Boudh, Kandhamal and Deogarh.

These districts may experience lightning, heavy rainfall and gusty winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph.

In Sundargarh, hailstorms accompanied by strong winds are also likely.

A yellow warning remains in force for districts including Mayurbhanj, Dhenkanal, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Cuttack, Jagatsinghpur, Puri, Khordha, Nayagarh, Ganjam and Gajapati, where wind speeds may touch 40 to 50 kmph.

Lower-intensity thunderstorm activity with winds of 30 to 40 kmph is likely in Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sonepur, Nuapada, Balangir, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.

Possible Impact and Advisory

The IMD has warned that lightning strikes, falling tree branches, localised flooding and temporary power disruptions may occur in affected districts.

Farmers have been advised to protect standing crops, especially fruits and vegetables, as hail and strong winds may damage plantations. Residents are urged to avoid open fields, stay away from electric poles and water bodies, and remain indoors during thunderstorm activity.

With pre-monsoon weather intensifying over Odisha, authorities have asked people to keep track of district-level forecasts and follow local advisories over the next 48 hours.
