In a key political move after the assembly election results in West Bengal, Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday appointed Amit Shah and Mohan Charan Majhi as observers for the election of the party’s legislature leader in the state.
The announcement was made through an official statement issued by Arun Singh. According to the release, the BJP Parliamentary Board has named Amit Shah as the central observer, while Mohan Charan Majhi will serve as co-observer for the crucial meeting.
The appointment carries major political significance as the observers will supervise the process of electing the BJP Legislature Party leader in West Bengal, a decision that is expected to clear the path for naming the party’s chief ministerial face.
Political observers view Amit Shah’s direct involvement as a clear indication that the BJP high command is treating developments in West Bengal with exceptional importance. Shah has long been one of the principal architects of the party’s expansion strategy in eastern India, and his presence is expected to lend weight to the selection process.
The inclusion of Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has also drawn attention. Party insiders see his appointment as a strategic move, especially as the BJP looks to strengthen its political footprint across eastern India. Majhi, who leads the BJP government in neighbouring Odisha, is expected to play an important role in ensuring a smooth and coordinated legislative transition.
The legislature party meeting is expected to take place shortly in Kolkata. The outcome of that meeting will likely determine who will be projected as the BJP’s first chief minister in the state.
The development comes after the BJP secured a decisive mandate in the West Bengal Assembly elections. The party has won 206 seats, crossing the two-thirds majority mark in the 293-member Assembly and positioning itself to form a government in the state for the first time.
The result marks a major political shift in Bengal, ending the 15-year rule of the All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee. The Trinamool Congress has won 80 seats and was leading in one constituency when results for 292 of the 293 seats had been declared.
With the legislature party leader set to be chosen soon, attention is now firmly focused on who the BJP will pick to lead its first government in West Bengal.
