As India accelerates the expansion of its National Highway network, the focus is increasingly shifting beyond connectivity and speed to prioritising safety and human protection. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) is now integrating advanced global safety technologies into highway infrastructure, with Truck Mounted Attenuators (TMAs) emerging as a crucial innovation.
Protecting Workers in High-Risk Zones
Highway construction and maintenance areas are among the most accident-prone zones, where workers operate dangerously close to fast-moving traffic. Recognising these risks, the government has encouraged concessionaires to adopt modern safety solutions. TMAs—impact-absorbing systems mounted on trucks—are now being deployed behind active work zones to act as protective barriers.
In the event of a collision, these systems absorb and dissipate kinetic energy, significantly reducing the force of impact. This helps minimise fatalities and serious injuries, protecting both on-site workers and motorists.
Smart Warning Systems for Better Visibility
Beyond crash protection, TMAs are equipped with high-intensity “wig-wag” warning lights. These lights flash in alternating patterns, providing clear directional alerts to approaching drivers. The feature is especially effective on high-speed highways, during night-time operations, and in low-visibility conditions such as fog.
Early visual warnings play a critical role in preventing accidents by allowing drivers to slow down or change lanes well in advance.
Large-Scale Deployment Across Key Corridors
The adoption of TMAs is already underway on a significant scale. Across nine highway projects covering over 680 kilometres in states like Andhra Pradesh and Gujarat, more than 30 TMAs and additional towable units have been deployed.
These systems meet international safety standards and are engineered to withstand impacts at speeds of up to 100 kmph, reflecting India’s move towards global best practices in road safety.
A Shift Towards Safer Infrastructure
The integration of TMAs marks a broader transformation in India’s infrastructure strategy. Safety is no longer being treated as an afterthought but as a core element of highway development. As the country continues to build faster and wider road networks, such innovations underline a strong commitment to reducing accidents and ensuring safer working conditions.
With the adoption of technologies like TMAs, India is taking a decisive step toward making its highways not just more efficient—but significantly safer for everyone on the road.
