IMD Issues Yellow Alert for Rain, Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds in Several Districts

Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several parts of Odisha over the coming days. A yellow warning has been issued for five districts, while rainfall is expected in additional districts during the forecast period.

According to the weather update provided in the report, the alert begins on Wednesday, with isolated thunderstorms and gusty winds likely in some areas. The warning comes as the southwest monsoon continues to withdraw from more parts of the State.

The IMD has advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorms and follow official weather bulletins for the latest district-wise forecasts.

Yellow Warning for Five Odisha Districts

The IMD has issued a yellow warning for Nayagarh, Ganjam, Gajapati, Khordha and Puri for Wednesday.

The weather department has also forecast rainfall in eight districts on September 15. On September 16, six districts in southern and coastal Odisha are likely to receive rain, while eight districts may experience rainfall on September 17.

The forecast indicates that rainfall activity could continue across different parts of Odisha even as the seasonal monsoon withdrawal progresses.

Residents are advised to monitor local weather conditions, particularly in areas where thunderstorms and lightning have been forecast.

Thunderstorms, Lightning and Gusty Winds Expected

The weather department has warned of isolated thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in affected areas.

Wind speeds may reach 30–40 kmph, potentially creating hazardous conditions in exposed locations.

During thunderstorms, residents should remain indoors and avoid open spaces, isolated trees and other exposed areas where lightning strikes may pose a risk. People should also stay away from electric poles and overhead wires during periods of severe weather.

Farmers, outdoor workers and people travelling through affected areas should take appropriate precautions and keep track of official weather updates.

Southwest Monsoon Withdraws from More Odisha Districts

While rain and thunderstorms remain possible in several areas, the southwest monsoon continues to retreat from Odisha.

According to the Meteorological Centre’s update issued on October 13, the monsoon has completely withdrawn from the following districts:

  • Sundargarh
  • Jharsuguda
  • Sambalpur
  • Deogarh
  • Sonepur
  • Bargarh
  • Nuapada
  • Bolangir
  • Kalahandi
  • Nabarangpur

The monsoon has also withdrawn from most parts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Boudh and Kandhamal districts.

In addition, parts of Dhenkanal, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri have experienced the retreat of monsoon conditions.

Rain Forecast Continues Despite Monsoon Withdrawal

The latest weather update highlights the transition taking place as the southwest monsoon withdraws from Odisha. However, the withdrawal does not rule out localised rainfall, thunderstorms or lightning during the coming days.

The IMD’s forecast points to continued weather activity in several districts during the specified period. Residents should therefore avoid assuming that conditions will remain dry simply because the monsoon has begun withdrawing.

People are advised to follow the latest official IMD bulletins for updated warnings, district-specific forecasts and safety instructions.
