Odisha Weather Alert: Thunderstorms, Gusty Winds, and Heatwave Conditions Likely Over Next 5 Days

Odisha is set to witness a dynamic mix of weather conditions over the next five days, with thunderstorms, gusty winds, heatwave spells, and rising humidity expected across different regions. According to the India Meteorological Department, this pattern reflects a typical pre-monsoon transition phase in the state.

Thunderstorms and Rainfall Activity

Light to moderate rain and thunderstorms are likely in several districts, especially across southern, coastal, and northern Odisha. On April 22, rainfall is expected in districts such as Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Koraput, Angul, Mayurbhanj, Balasore, Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, Ganjam, and Gajapati, while other areas may remain largely dry.

Similar conditions are expected to persist over the next two days, with districts like Keonjhar, Puri, Khordha, Ganjam, Rayagada, and Koraput remaining vulnerable to thunderstorms and light rainfall.

By April 24 and 25, rainfall activity is likely to reduce and remain mostly confined to southern districts such as Malkangiri, Gajapati, Rayagada, Koraput, and Kandhamal.

Yellow Warning for Thunderstorms and Winds

The IMD has issued a Yellow Warning for multiple districts, cautioning residents about thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds, particularly during afternoon and evening hours. Wind speeds may reach 40–50 kmph in districts like Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj, while other regions may experience winds of 30–40 kmph.

Heatwave and Warm Nights to Intensify

Despite the chances of rainfall, heatwave conditions are expected to intensify from April 23 onwards, especially in western and central districts such as Jharsuguda, Balangir, Angul, and Kandhamal.

Warm night conditions are also likely in areas like Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, and Balangir, offering little relief from the daytime heat.

Coastal Areas to Face High Humidity

Coastal districts including Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Puri, Khordha, and Ganjam are expected to experience hot and humid conditions, increasing overall discomfort levels.

Advisory for Residents

With fluctuating weather conditions, residents are advised to remain cautious during thunderstorms and lightning, avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during peak heat hours, and stay well-hydrated. The evolving weather pattern highlights Odisha’s typical pre-monsoon phase, marked by a mix of heat and localized storm activity.
