Puri: The much-anticipated construction of chariots for the world-renowned Rath Yatra has officially commenced, marking the beginning of one of Odisha’s most sacred annual traditions. The work started on Tuesday, following the ceremonial Rath Katha Anukula ritual held on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya.
The initial phase of construction is underway at the Rathakhala (chariot yard), where skilled artisans have begun crafting the foundational components of the three grand chariots. The process started with the preparation of ‘tumbas’—circular wooden axles that form the core structure of the chariot wheels. These are meticulously shaped from large logs using age-old techniques and traditional hand tools, preserving centuries-old craftsmanship.
Specialised servitors, known as Maharana sevayats, are leading the shaping and carving process. They begin by drilling precise holes into massive wooden logs, which are then carefully sculpted into perfectly rounded forms. Meanwhile, Karatiya sevayats are actively engaged in cutting the timber into required sizes using heavy saws, ensuring that each piece meets the specifications needed for the chariot framework. Once prepared, these wooden components are handed over to the Maharana craftsmen for further detailing and assembly.
Extended Timeline Due to Intercalary Month
This year’s construction process comes with a significant advantage—an extended working period. Due to the occurrence of an intercalary (extra) month of Jyeshtha in the Hindu calendar, the artisans will have more time than usual to complete the intricate work. Traditionally, the construction spans around 59 days, but in 2026, craftsmen will benefit from approximately 88 working days.
This extended schedule is expected to positively impact the overall quality of the chariots. With additional time at their disposal, artisans can focus more on detailing, precision, and finishing, ensuring that each component meets the highest standards of traditional craftsmanship.
Preserving Rituals and Heritage
The chariot construction process is deeply rooted in ritualistic practices and follows a strict sequence of religious customs. Each stage is performed by designated servitor groups, maintaining the sanctity and continuity of traditions associated with the Rath Yatra festival.
Every year, the construction not only symbolizes devotion but also showcases Odisha’s rich cultural heritage and skilled craftsmanship. The seamless coordination between different groups of sevayats reflects a legacy that has been preserved for generations.
As preparations gather pace, the sacred town of Puri is set to witness the gradual transformation of raw timber into majestic chariots that will carry the deities during the grand Rath Yatra festival.
