Amid intensifying heatwave conditions across Odisha, district administrations have stepped up precautionary measures to safeguard students, announcing temporary closure of schools and revised academic arrangements in several regions.
Schools Shut in Cuttack Amid Rising Heat
In a proactive move, the Cuttack district administration has ordered the closure of all government, aided, and private schools from April 21 to April 23, 2026. The directive also applies to Anganwadi centres, which will remain shut during this period due to extreme weather conditions.
However, to prevent academic disruption, teachers have been instructed to report to schools and conduct online classes. This hybrid approach aims to ensure that the syllabus is covered without exposing students to harsh outdoor conditions. Colleges in the district will also remain closed, although scheduled examinations will continue as planned.
Authorities have further directed Anganwadi centres to distribute take-home rations instead of serving cooked meals, ensuring nutritional support continues despite the shutdown. The administration has warned of strict action against any institution found violating the order.
Ganjam Follows Suit with 3-Day Closure
A similar decision has been taken in Ganjam, where all schools from kindergarten to Class 12 will remain closed from April 21 to April 23. The move comes in response to worsening heatwave conditions across the district.
Despite the closure, ongoing supplementary examinations for Class 5 and Class 8 students will be conducted as per schedule, ensuring that academic assessments are not delayed.
Revised School Timings in Kendrapara
In Kendrapara, authorities have opted for a different approach by revising school timings instead of complete closure. All educational institutions, including Anganwadi centres and schools up to Class 12, will now function from 6:30 AM to 9:00 AM until further notice.
This early morning schedule is intended to help students avoid peak daytime temperatures while continuing their studies safely.
Heatwave Intensifies Across the State
The decisions come as a severe heatwave continues to grip Odisha, with temperatures crossing the 40°C mark in at least 14 cities. Titlagarh recorded the highest temperature at 42.5°C, followed closely by Jharsuguda at 42.4°C and Talcher at 42°C.
Other regions, including Balangir (41.8°C), Angul (41.7°C), and Bhawanipatna (41°C), have also reported dangerously high temperatures, raising concerns about public health and safety.
Advisory and Precautionary Measures
With the heatwave showing no immediate signs of relief, authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions. People are advised to avoid stepping out during peak afternoon hours, stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and take extra care of children and the elderly.
The temporary closure of schools and revised schedules highlight the administration’s focus on prioritising student safety while maintaining academic continuity during extreme weather conditions.
