Tilak Varma’s Blazing 101 Off 45 Powers Mumbai Indians to 99-Run Win, Shatters IPL Records

In a breathtaking display of power-hitting, Tilak Varma delivered one of the most explosive innings in Indian Premier League history, leading Mumbai Indians to a commanding 99-run victory over Gujarat Titans on Monday.

Tilak Varma’s Century Rewrites IPL Record Books

Varma’s unbeaten 101 off just 45 balls marked his maiden IPL century, but it was far more than just a milestone. The left-hander equalled the franchise record for the fastest century by a Mumbai Indians batter, matching Sanath Jayasuriya’s iconic 45-ball hundred set in 2008.

What truly set this innings apart, however, was its dramatic transformation. Varma started cautiously, scoring only 17 runs off his first 20 deliveries. But once settled, he unleashed a ferocious counterattack, smashing 84 runs in his next 25 balls — a staggering shift that reflected one of the biggest strike-rate jumps ever seen in an IPL innings.

From Cautious Start to Ruthless Finish

For nearly 14 overs, boundaries were hard to come by as Varma focused on building his innings. He had just 19 runs from 22 balls at one stage, carefully assessing the pitch and opposition attack.

Then came the turning point.

In the final stretch, Varma completely dismantled the Gujarat Titans bowling unit. His last 23 deliveries produced an astonishing 82 runs, including 15 boundaries, turning the game decisively in Mumbai’s favour.

Speaking after the match, Varma explained his approach:
“I wanted to spend time in the middle. Initially, I focused on playing each ball on merit. Once I got set, it was about trusting my ability and accelerating when the situation demanded.”

Record-Breaking Finish in Death Overs

The final overs witnessed sheer domination. Varma scored 82 runs in the last six overs — the highest ever by a batter in that phase of an IPL innings, surpassing Quinton de Kock’s previous record of 80.

He also hammered 64 runs in the last four overs, registering the second-highest tally in that phase, just behind Tim David’s 68 earlier this season.

A Knock for the Ages

This innings not only powered Mumbai Indians to a dominant win but also highlighted Tilak Varma’s evolution as a match-winner. His ability to switch gears so dramatically — from consolidation to destruction — underlines the growing maturity in his game.

With this performance, Varma has firmly established himself among the league’s most exciting young talents, delivering a knock that will be remembered as one of the finest in IPL history.
