A major search and rescue operation was launched off the coast of Oman after an Indian-flagged dhow carrying 14 Indian crew members began sinking in the Arabian Sea. The incident occurred approximately 80 nautical miles east of Ras Al Hadd on June 14, prompting a coordinated international rescue effort involving the US Navy, Omani authorities and nearby merchant vessels.
According to sources, the distress situation unfolded during the morning hours when the vessel, identified as Virat 1, reportedly started taking on water and faced the risk of sinking. After receiving information about the emergency, the US Navy alerted shore-based authorities and initiated immediate assistance to safeguard the lives of those onboard.
US Navy Launches Emergency Response
In a swift rescue operation, a US Navy P-8 maritime patrol aircraft was deployed to the area. The aircraft dropped a life raft near the distressed vessel and closely monitored the evacuation process.
The US Navy also coordinated assistance from a nearby merchant ship, MV Jabal Ali 9, a St Kitts and Nevis-flagged vessel operating in the vicinity. Crew members of the sinking dhow were directed to abandon the vessel and board the emergency life raft as rescue efforts intensified.
Sources said the exact cause of the incident remains unknown, and investigations are expected to determine what led to the vessel’s sudden distress.
Indian Embassy Monitoring Rescue Efforts
Confirming the incident, the Embassy of India in Muscat stated that it is closely coordinating with local authorities regarding the rescue operation.
“The Mission has learnt of an incident involving an Indian Flagged Mechanised Sailing Vessel Virat 1, off the coast of Oman, reportedly embarked with 14 Indian crew. Search and Rescue is being coordinated with the Omani authorities and vessels in vicinity of the incident,” the embassy said in a statement.
Officials are maintaining close contact with Omani authorities and rescue teams to ensure the safety and welfare of all crew members.

The incident occurred near the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz region, one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors through which a substantial portion of global oil and commercial shipping traffic passes.
