Bhubaneswar Gets Rs 55.85-Crore Six-Lane Road Project Connecting Guru Kelucharan Park to Patia Railway Station

Bhubaneswar: A major road infrastructure project aimed at improving connectivity and reducing traffic congestion in northern Bhubaneswar took off on Friday with the foundation stone being laid for a new six-lane road connecting Guru Kelucharan Park with Patia Railway Station.

Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA) Chairman Krushna Chandra Mahapatra laid the foundation stone for the project, which is being developed as part of the city’s Comprehensive Development Plan (CDP) road network.

2.387-Km Six-Lane Road to Improve Connectivity

The proposed road will be 45 metres wide and stretch for approximately 2.387 kilometres.

It will pass through the Patia, Chandrasekharpur and Gadakana mouzas, creating a direct and important link to Patia Railway Station under the Right Side Road Network (RSRN).

The new corridor is also expected to provide an alternative route for commuters using the busy Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan corridor, which frequently experiences heavy traffic.

Rs 55.85 Crore Project to Be Completed in 18 Months

The six-lane road has been sanctioned at an estimated cost of Rs 55.85 crore and is scheduled to be completed within 18 months.

Unlike a basic road-widening project, the proposed corridor will include several supporting urban infrastructure facilities. These include:

  • Street lighting
  • Footpaths for pedestrians
  • Dedicated utility corridor
  • Drainage infrastructure
  • Improved road connectivity and safety provisions

The integrated design is expected to improve traffic flow while also making the route safer and more convenient for pedestrians and commuters.

Minister Highlights Traffic Decongestion

Speaking at the foundation stone-laying ceremony, Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said the project would play an important role in improving traffic movement in northern Bhubaneswar.

He said the new road would help reduce congestion on the Jaydev Vihar-Nandankanan route and provide smoother access to Patia Railway Station.

The improved connectivity is also expected to benefit residents of Patia, Chandrasekharpur, Gadakana and nearby areas, particularly as these parts of the capital continue to witness rapid urban development.

BDA Reviews Affordable Housing Project at Gadakana

After the foundation stone ceremony, Minister Mahapatra visited the Affordable Housing Project (AHP) at Gadakana and reviewed the progress of the ongoing construction.

The housing project is being implemented by the Bhubaneswar Development Authority under the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) model.

The project comprises 680 dwelling units and is aimed at expanding affordable housing facilities in Bhubaneswar for eligible beneficiaries.

The development of affordable housing alongside major road infrastructure is expected to support the city’s growing population and address increasing demand for residential facilities.

Officials Attend Foundation Ceremony

Bhubaneswar North MLA Susant Kumar Rout, local corporators Laxmipriya Parida and Sushama Sahoo, BDA Vice-Chairman Chanchal Rana and senior officials of the development authority attended the foundation stone-laying ceremony.

The new road and housing project together represent a broader push to strengthen Bhubaneswar’s urban infrastructure, improve mobility and expand access to planned residential facilities.

As northern Bhubaneswar continues to develop into a major residential, commercial and transport hub, projects such as the new six-lane corridor are expected to become increasingly important for managing traffic and improving connectivity across the city.
