New Delhi: In a significant step towards energy security, sustainable transportation and reduced dependence on imported crude oil, India on Friday launched E85 fuel, a new fuel blend containing 85% ethanol and 15% petrol. The initiative forms part of the country’s ambitious flex-fuel mobility programme, aimed at promoting cleaner fuels and strengthening domestic energy resources.
The E85 fuel was formally launched in New Delhi in the presence of Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The move marks another milestone in India’s efforts to accelerate the transition towards alternative fuels and lower carbon emissions.
India Introduces E85 Fuel for Flex-Fuel Vehicles
The newly launched E85 fuel is designed for flex-fuel vehicles (FFVs), which can run on varying blends of petrol and ethanol, ranging from E20 to E100. A day before the fuel launch, Minister Puri unveiled India’s first flex-fuel passenger vehicle manufactured by Maruti Suzuki, highlighting the government’s commitment to expanding ethanol-based transportation.
Flex-fuel technology allows vehicles to operate efficiently on high ethanol blends, helping reduce fossil fuel consumption while creating new opportunities for India’s agricultural sector.
Boost to Ethanol Production and Rural Economy
India has significantly expanded its ethanol production capabilities in recent years. Ethanol is now being produced from multiple feedstock sources, including:
- Agricultural waste
- Broken grains
- Sugarcane by-products
- Bamboo
- Seaweed
The government believes increased ethanol demand will provide additional income opportunities for farmers, strengthen rural economies and support the broader objective of Atmanirbhar Bharat.
According to Hardeep Singh Puri, flex-fuel mobility offers a practical solution to reduce India’s dependence on imported crude oil while simultaneously promoting clean energy and rural development.
E85 Fuel to Support Cleaner Air
One of the major advantages of E85 fuel is its environmental benefit. Government officials noted that ethanol-rich fuel produces near-zero particulate matter (PM) emissions, making it an important tool in combating air pollution in urban centres.
The government’s policy think tank, NITI Aayog, classifies ethanol-powered flex-fuel vehicles, including those operating on E85, as Zero-Emission Vehicles (ZEVs) under its framework.
With worsening air quality remaining a challenge in several Indian cities, wider adoption of flex-fuel vehicles could contribute significantly to cleaner transportation.
Reducing Dependence on Imported Crude Oil
India is the world’s third-largest importer of crude oil and continues to rely heavily on overseas energy supplies. Nearly half of India’s crude oil imports originate from the Middle East, making the country vulnerable to geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions.
The launch of E85 fuel comes at a time when global energy markets are witnessing volatility due to ongoing conflicts in West Asia. Rising crude prices have increased pressure on India’s fuel import bill, inflation levels and overall economic growth.
By increasing ethanol blending and encouraging flex-fuel vehicle adoption, India aims to reduce its dependence on imported petroleum products and improve long-term energy security.
Strategic Importance Amid Global Uncertainty
The government has been actively promoting alternative fuels as part of its broader strategy to insulate the economy from external oil shocks. Recent increases in fuel prices and concerns over disruptions in global shipping routes have further reinforced the need for diversified energy sources.
Experts believe the success of E85 fuel and flex-fuel vehicles could significantly reduce India’s oil import burden while advancing climate goals and sustainable mobility initiatives.
