Bhubaneswar: Odisha is bracing for the possible impact of a developing cyclone, with rainfall expected to intensify across coastal districts from October 26. The weather forecast indicates very heavy rainfall on October 27, followed by extremely heavy rainfall of 20–30 cm on October 28 and 29.
As precautionary measures gather pace, district administrations and civic authorities have stepped up preparations to minimise potential damage and ensure public safety. In Cuttack, authorities have directed the removal of unsafe decorative gates, hoardings and temporary structures associated with Durga Puja celebrations.
Extremely Heavy Rainfall Forecast for October 28 and 29
According to the forecast provided in the report, rainfall activity is expected to increase across coastal Odisha from October 26 as the weather system develops over the Bay of Bengal.
Very heavy rainfall is forecast for October 27, while extremely heavy rainfall measuring 20–30 cm is expected in affected areas on October 28 and 29.
The anticipated weather conditions have prompted authorities to strengthen disaster preparedness, particularly in vulnerable areas. Residents are advised to monitor official weather bulletins and follow instructions issued by local administrations.
Cuttack Administration Orders Removal of Unsafe Hoardings
Ahead of the possible cyclone, the Cuttack district administration has directed the removal of unsafe decorative gates and hoardings within 48 hours.
Puja committees have also been instructed to dismantle dangerous temporary structures erected near puja pandals. These measures are intended to reduce the risk of structures collapsing or being damaged during strong winds and heavy rainfall.
The administration has warned that failure to comply with the deadline could result in the Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) launching a drive to remove the unsafe structures.
The move comes as part of precautionary efforts to protect residents and visitors during the festive period, when temporary decorations, gates and hoardings may be present at crowded locations.
Government Employees’ Leave Cancelled in Several Districts
Authorities have intensified preparedness measures in districts facing heightened weather-related risks.
Puri, Ganjam and Gajapati districts are under a red alert, according to the report. The leave of government officials and employees in these districts has been cancelled, and personnel have been directed to report for duty immediately.
The leave of government employees in Khordha district has also been cancelled as a precautionary measure.
The decisions are aimed at ensuring the availability of administrative personnel to coordinate emergency responses, monitor local conditions and support relief operations if the situation deteriorates.
ODRAF and NDRF Teams Put on Alert
The state government has begun preparations to respond to possible emergencies arising from the developing weather system.
Revenue Minister Suresh Pujari said that relief arrangements were being made and cyclone shelters were being prepared to accommodate people if evacuation becomes necessary.
He stated that instructions had been issued to ensure all cyclone and flood relief centres remained ready. Teams from the Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have also been deployed.
According to the minister, additional ODRAF and NDRF teams will be sent to districts wherever required, based on assessments and requests from the respective district collectors.
The deployment is intended to strengthen emergency response capacity and support rescue, evacuation and relief operations if the cyclone causes significant disruption.
Authorities Step Up Preparations Ahead of Possible Cyclone
With heavy to extremely heavy rainfall forecast for parts of Odisha, the administration is focusing on precautionary measures, including the removal of unsafe structures, cancellation of official leave and the preparation of relief centres.
Residents in vulnerable areas should remain alert, avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather and follow official instructions regarding evacuation and safety. Fishermen should comply with any restrictions issued by the authorities.
The cyclone’s eventual path and intensity may change as the system develops. Residents should therefore rely on the latest India Meteorological Department (IMD) bulletins and official district administration advisories for updated information.
