Amid the high-stakes counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly elections, the Kolkata Police on Monday imposed a temporary ban on victory processions, rallies, and public celebrations across the city in an effort to maintain law and order.
According to an official notification, no political party, supporter group, or organisation will be permitted to hold public celebrations on May 4 while counting remains underway. Authorities said the restriction has been enforced as a precautionary measure to prevent disruption, traffic congestion, or any untoward incident during the sensitive counting period.
Strict Security Measures Across the City
With political tensions running high and counting centres under heavy security, police officials stressed that maintaining peace and normal civic movement remains the top priority. Senior officers have directed all police stations across the city to remain on alert and ensure strict enforcement of the order.
The ban comes as counting continues across the state, drawing intense attention from political parties, candidates, and supporters. Security arrangements have been significantly tightened in and around counting centres to avoid clashes or crowd build-up.
Celebrations Allowed Later With Permission
The police clarified that victory processions may be held from May 5 onward, but only after prior approval from the Officer-in-Charge of the concerned police station.
Authorities further stated that any procession permitted after the counting day must strictly follow all prevailing rules, guidelines, and conditions mentioned in the permission order. Any violation could invite legal action under relevant provisions of law.
Political Stakes Remain High
As counting progressed, the Bharatiya Janata Party was leading in 173 seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress was ahead in 85 constituencies. Smaller parties including Communist Party of India (Marxist) and regional outfits were also leading in a handful of seats.
However, officials noted that the counting process was still underway and final results had not yet been formally declared.
Record Voter Participation
The election has already made headlines for its remarkable voter turnout. West Bengal recorded one of its highest-ever poll participations since Independence, reflecting the intensity of political interest across the state.
The current contest has attracted nationwide attention, especially given the significance of the previous assembly election in which Mamata Banerjee led the All India Trinamool Congress to a decisive victory.
With trends still evolving, all eyes remain on the final outcome as the political future of the state moves closer to clarity.
