A prolonged spell of unstable pre-monsoon weather is set to affect large parts of Odisha over the next seven days, with the India Meteorological Department issuing Orange and Yellow warnings for thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds and hailstorms in multiple districts.
The evolving weather pattern is expected to bring intermittent rainfall across coastal, northern, western and southern parts of the state, with the most intense activity forecast during afternoon and evening hours.
Day 1: Thunderstorm Activity Begins Across Odisha
The first day is likely to witness light to moderate rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms across a wide swathe of the state, including Puri, Bhubaneswar (in Khordha), Cuttack and Ganjam.
An Orange Warning has been issued for northern districts such as Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar and Balasore, along with southern districts including Koraput and Malkangiri.
These areas may experience thunderstorms with lightning and gusty surface winds reaching 50 to 60 kmph.
A Yellow Warning is in place for coastal and central districts including Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara, where wind speeds may touch 40 to 50 kmph.
Day 2: Weather Intensifies, Hailstorm Risk Emerges
Rainfall activity is expected to intensify on the second day, with several northern, western and coastal districts likely to receive moderate showers.
Hailstorms are likely in parts of Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore and Rayagada.
The Orange Warning remains active for a broader belt including Bhadrak, Jajpur and Sundargarh, where damaging winds and frequent lightning could affect normal life.
Day 3: Severe Thunderstorm Threat Continues
The third day is likely to bring continued convective activity across most districts.
Severe thunderstorms with strong winds of 50 to 60 kmph and isolated hailstorms are likely in districts such as Sambalpur and Jharsuguda, along with several northern districts.
Yellow warnings will remain in effect across coastal and southern Odisha, keeping the threat of lightning and moderate gusty winds alive.
Day 4: Intense Weather Shifts Towards Coastal and Northern Odisha
By the fourth day, rainfall is expected to continue over interior and coastal regions, but the focus of more intense activity may shift again.
Districts such as Balasore and Gajapati are likely to remain under Orange Warning.
Wind speeds could again touch 50 to 60 kmph, raising concerns over damage to standing crops, temporary structures, trees and power infrastructure.
Day 5 to Day 7: Gradual Easing, But Thunderstorms Persist
From the fifth day onward, the overall intensity of the weather system is expected to gradually reduce.
However, Yellow Warnings will continue for several districts, especially across coastal and southern Odisha.
Thunderstorms accompanied by winds of 30 to 40 kmph are still likely, while isolated rainfall may continue in interior districts. Some pockets may also remain dry during this phase.
Major Concerns During the 7-Day Weather Spell
The week-long spell may bring multiple weather-related risks across the state:
- Lightning activity is expected to remain high, particularly during afternoon and evening hours.
- Gusty winds reaching up to 60 kmph may uproot trees and damage electric poles, tin roofs and weak structures.
- Hailstorms during Day 2 and Day 3 could affect agriculture, especially in northern Odisha.
Public Advisory
The India Meteorological Department has advised residents to remain alert as weather conditions may change rapidly.
People are urged to avoid open fields during thunderstorms, stay away from trees and electric poles, and secure loose outdoor objects. Farmers have also been advised to take precautions to protect standing crops from hail and wind damage.
Overall Weather Outlook
The coming week signals a classic pre-monsoon convective phase over Odisha, marked by repeated thunderstorm activity, localized heavy showers and occasional severe weather episodes.
Authorities are keeping a close watch as northern, coastal and tribal districts remain particularly vulnerable to sudden weather changes.
