Five-State Verdict Day Begins: Counting Under Tight Security as Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry Await Results

The political fate of five key regions — West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Puducherry — is being decided today as counting of votes began at 8 am amid multi-layer security arrangements at counting centres across the country. Electronic Voting Machines have been kept in strong rooms under four-tier security, with officials maintaining round-the-clock surveillance ahead of one of the biggest electoral verdict days since the 2024 general election.

With counting underway, national attention has shifted sharply to these five contests, each carrying significant political implications for both national and regional parties. Early postal ballot rounds are expected to set the tone before full EVM counting gathers pace later in the day.

West Bengal Remains the Biggest Political Battleground

All eyes are firmly on West Bengal, where the contest between the All India Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee and the Bharatiya Janata Party has turned into the centrepiece of the 2026 election narrative.

The state voted across 294 constituencies, with one seat excluded from polling. Exit polls and early assessments suggested a close contest, intensifying speculation over whether Mamata Banerjee can retain power or whether the BJP can make a decisive breakthrough in one of India’s most politically significant states.

Assam Watches for BJP’s Hat-Trick Bid

In Assam, the ruling BJP is aiming for a third consecutive term. The election carries extra significance as it is the first major Assembly battle after delimitation, making it a crucial test for Himanta Biswa Sarma.

The opposition Indian National Congress has also projected confidence, setting up a competitive contest in the 126-seat Assembly. Key local issues — including employment, flood management, and demographic concerns — shaped the campaign in the state.

Tamil Nadu Contest Adds New Twist

The battle in Tamil Nadu remains one of the most closely watched. While the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam entered the contest with organisational strength, the election has drawn extra attention because of the emergence of Vijay and his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.

With 234 seats at stake and over 55 million voters participating, Tamil Nadu could deliver one of the day’s most closely analysed verdicts.

Kerala and Puducherry Add Coalition Drama

In Kerala, the contest is widely being viewed as a high-stakes battle between the ruling Left Democratic Front and the opposition United Democratic Front.

Meanwhile, in Puducherry, alliance arithmetic remains critical, with regional parties and the BJP hoping to gain enough numbers to form the next government.

Security Tight, Early Trends in Focus

Security has been tightened across all counting centres, with central forces, local police and election observers deployed to ensure a smooth counting process. As EVMs are opened and round-wise counting progresses, early trends will begin shaping the national political conversation.

By the end of the day, the results will decide not only who forms governments in these five regions, but also offer a strong political signal ahead of future national contests.
