Unique Identification Authority of India Clarifies: Aadhaar Not Valid Proof of Date of Birth

In an important clarification, the Unique Identification Authority of India has stated that the Aadhaar card should not be treated as a valid proof of date of birth. While Aadhaar remains a widely accepted document for identity verification, it is not designed to confirm or authenticate an individual’s birth date.

Aadhaar Meant Only for Identity Authentication

UIDAI emphasised that Aadhaar’s primary purpose is to establish identity using biometric and demographic data. The authority clarified that although date of birth is captured during enrolment or updates, it does not serve as verified proof of that information.

This clarification has been issued to Aadhaar User Agencies (AUAs) and e-KYC User Agencies (KUAs) to address confusion around the document’s scope.

How Date of Birth is Recorded

According to UIDAI, the date of birth mentioned on Aadhaar is based on information provided by individuals at the time of registration. Users may submit supporting documents such as birth certificates, school records, passports, or other government-issued certificates.

In cases where no valid proof is available, the date of birth may be recorded based on self-declaration or approximate details. If only the year of birth is provided, the system defaults the date to January 1 of that year.

No Independent Verification of Birth Date

UIDAI made it clear that Aadhaar does not independently verify the accuracy of the date of birth. The authentication process only confirms identity by matching biometric and demographic data with the central database, not personal attributes like age.

Valid as ID and Address Proof

Despite the limitation, Aadhaar continues to be a valid proof of identity and address in multiple formats, including physical Aadhaar, e-Aadhaar, masked Aadhaar, offline XML, and QR code versions—subject to applicable regulations.

Key Takeaway

The clarification reinforces that Aadhaar is strictly an identity document and should not be relied upon for validating date of birth. Individuals are advised to use appropriate official documents like birth certificates or educational records when proof of age is required.
