Amid intensifying summer conditions and rising health concerns, the Odisha government has announced plans to establish dedicated Heatwave Relief Centres across the state to protect citizens from extreme temperatures.
State Gears Up for Severe Heatwave
Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari said the initiative comes in response to forecasts indicating a sharp rise in temperatures in the coming days. The proposed shelters will function on the lines of cyclone and flood relief centres, offering safe spaces for people to escape the scorching heat.
“These centres will allow people to rest, access drinking water, and stay protected during peak heat hours,” the minister stated, underlining the urgency of the move as heatwave conditions worsen across several districts.
Focus on Vulnerable Regions First
In the initial phase, the government plans to set up these relief centres in areas most prone to extreme heat, particularly in western Odisha, where temperatures frequently cross 44–45°C. This targeted rollout aims to ensure maximum impact and efficient use of resources.
Officials believe the initiative will be especially beneficial for outdoor workers, daily wage earners, and those without access to cooling facilities, who face the highest risk of heatstroke and dehydration.
Inspired by Existing Disaster Infrastructure
The concept of heatwave shelters is being modelled after Odisha’s well-established cyclone shelter system, which has been instrumental in disaster management over the years. With climate patterns becoming more unpredictable, the state is now expanding its preparedness to include heat-related emergencies.
Minister Pujari also revealed that the government is consulting experts and exploring advanced solutions already implemented in cities like Jaipur, with plans to adapt similar technologies and strategies in Odisha.
A Step Towards Climate Resilience
The move reflects a broader shift in disaster management priorities, recognising heatwaves as a growing threat alongside traditional challenges like cyclones and floods. By introducing dedicated infrastructure, Odisha aims to reduce heat-related illnesses and enhance public safety during extreme weather events.
The government is expected to finalise implementation details soon, with relief centres likely to be operational ahead of peak summer conditions.
