Petrol, Diesel Vehicles Have No Long-Term Future: Nitin Gadkari Pushes for Green Mobility Shift

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari has reiterated that petrol and diesel vehicles are unlikely to remain viable in the long run, urging the automobile industry to accelerate its transition towards cleaner and sustainable fuel alternatives.

Strong Push for Cleaner Fuels

Speaking at the Busworld India Conclave 2025, Gadkari highlighted the economic and environmental challenges posed by fossil fuels, including rising import costs and increasing pollution levels. He stressed that India must move decisively towards green mobility solutions to secure a sustainable future.

Focus on Biofuels, EVs, and Hydrogen

The minister called on automakers to scale up efforts in developing vehicles powered by biofuels, CNG, LNG, and electricity. He also emphasised the growing importance of hydrogen as a clean energy source, describing it as the “fuel of the future.”

“We are already operating hydrogen-powered trucks and buses on several routes,” Gadkari noted, adding that multiple companies are actively involved in pilot projects.

Leading automobile manufacturers such as Tata Motors, Volvo, Ashok Leyland, and Mahindra & Mahindra are currently participating in hydrogen mobility trials.

Ethanol and Flex-Fuel Vehicles Gain Momentum

Gadkari also pointed to the increasing adoption of ethanol-blended fuels in India. Flex-fuel engines capable of running on higher ethanol blends, such as E20, are already being developed and deployed, marking a key step in reducing dependence on traditional fuels.

Rising Demand for Electric Mobility

With India’s focus on sustainable transport intensifying, demand for electric buses is expected to surge significantly. Gadkari projected a requirement of around 1.5 lakh electric buses over the next three years, compared to the current annual production capacity of about 70,000 units.

Industry Urged to Prioritise Quality and Safety

Alongside the transition to cleaner fuels, the minister emphasised the need for manufacturers to maintain high standards of safety, quality, and passenger comfort.

A Clear Direction for the Future

Gadkari’s remarks underline the government’s long-term vision to phase out fossil fuel dependency and promote eco-friendly mobility solutions. As policy support and industry participation grow, India’s transport sector is poised for a major transformation.
