Piyush Chawla Announces Retirement from All Forms of Cricket After Glorious Two-Decade Career

June 6, New Delhi: Veteran Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla, a key figure in India’s 2007 T20 and 2011 ODI World Cup triumphs, has officially announced his retirement from all forms of professional cricket. The 36-year-old made the announcement on Friday through an emotional post on Instagram, marking the end of a distinguished career spanning over two decades.

“After more than two decades on the field, the time has come to bid adieu to the beautiful game,” Chawla wrote, reflecting on his memorable cricketing journey.

Chawla debuted for India in 2006 at the age of 17, becoming the country’s second youngest male Test debutant after Sachin Tendulkar. Over the next six years, he represented India in 3 Tests, 25 ODIs, and 7 T20Is, claiming 43 international wickets.

His international highlight reel includes being a part of India’s World Cup-winning squads in 2007 (T20) and 2011 (ODI). “Every moment in this incredible journey has been nothing short of a blessing,” Chawla shared, looking back on his time with the national team.

Beyond international cricket, Chawla was a prominent figure in domestic and franchise leagues. He took over 1000 wickets in professional cricket and was a stalwart in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Featuring for Punjab Kings, Kolkata Knight Riders, Chennai Super Kings, and most recently Mumbai Indians, he accumulated 192 wickets in 192 IPL matches.

“A heartfelt thank you to the IPL franchises who placed their trust in me… I have cherished every moment playing in it,” he noted, while also expressing gratitude to his coaches, Shri K.K. Gautam and the late Shri Pankaj Saraswat, for guiding his journey.

Chawla’s final professional outing came in November 2024 for Uttar Pradesh during the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he delivered a match-winning spell of 4/12 at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.

“Though I step away from the crease, cricket will always live within me,” Chawla wrote, hinting at future involvement with the game in some capacity.

With his retirement, Indian cricket bids farewell to one of its most consistent leg-spinners, whose contributions at crucial moments left an indelible mark on the nation’s cricketing history.
