June 6, New Delhi: Renowned poet, lyricist, and public intellectual Javed Akhtar has been conferred with the prestigious Dostoevsky Star Award by the Russian House, recognizing his outstanding global contribution to literature and cultural dialogue.
Celebrating the achievement, his wife and acclaimed actor Shabana Azmi took to Instagram to share heartfelt photos from the ceremony. “Another big honour for Javed Akhtar as he receives the Dostoevsky Star Award! This year, the Russian House is deeply honoured to present the Dostoevsky Star Award to the renowned poet, lyricist, and public intellectual Mr. Javed Akhtar, in recognition of his remarkable influence on cultural dialogue and literary heritage,” read the message featured in the shared images.
Named after legendary Russian author Fyodor Dostoevsky, the award honours individuals who have significantly influenced society through their writing, thought, and cultural engagement. Javed Akhtar was applauded for his work that transcends borders, blending poetic finesse with strong advocacy on social and human rights issues.
The Russian House lauded Akhtar’s role in connecting cultures through the power of words, noting how his poetry and lyrics have promoted understanding and dialogue across diverse audiences. The award event was attended by notable diplomats, authors, and artists from around the globe, further highlighting the international appreciation of his contributions.
Akhtar’s career has been decorated with numerous prestigious honours over the years. He received the Padma Shri in 1999 and the Padma Bhushan in 2007 from the Government of India. In 2013, he was awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his Urdu poetry collection Lava, and in 2020, he was honoured with the Richard Dawkins Award for championing secularism and human rights.
