In a significant boost to cancer care services, the Odisha government has expanded the benefits available under the integrated Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) and Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana (GJAY) by introducing 91 additional cancer treatment packages. The expansion has been made under the Mukhyamantri Cancer Care Abhiyan, with the objective of improving access to quality cancer treatment and providing comprehensive healthcare support to beneficiaries across the state.
With the latest addition, eligible patients will have access to a wider range of specialised cancer treatments under the state’s integrated health insurance programme.
91 New State-Specific Cancer Packages Added
According to officials, the newly introduced cancer treatment packages have been incorporated into the AB-PMJAY-GJAY Treatment Package Master as state-specific packages.
The inclusion was approved by the National Health Authority (NHA), enabling Odisha to further strengthen its cancer care framework under the integrated health scheme.
Following the expansion:
- Cancer treatment packages have increased from 454 to 545.
- The total number of treatment packages under AB-PMJAY-GJAY has risen from 2,163 to 2,254.
The additional packages are expected to provide beneficiaries with access to a broader spectrum of cancer diagnosis, treatment and supportive care services.
Strengthening Cancer Care Across Odisha
The Odisha government said the introduction of the new packages is part of its ongoing efforts to improve healthcare facilities for beneficiaries covered under the integrated insurance scheme.
The expansion is expected to enhance treatment options for patients suffering from various types of cancer, ensuring they receive timely and comprehensive medical care without facing excessive financial burden.
Officials noted that the move aligns with the state’s commitment to strengthening public healthcare infrastructure and improving outcomes for cancer patients.
Mukhyamantri Cancer Care Abhiyan
The integrated Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana-Gopabandhu Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY-GJAY) was launched in Odisha on April 11, 2025, extending health insurance coverage to eligible families across the state.
Recognising the growing burden of cancer and the importance of early diagnosis, timely intervention and multidisciplinary treatment, the state government subsequently launched the Mukhyamantri Cancer Care Abhiyan.
The initiative was introduced to strengthen cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment services through specialised healthcare support under the integrated insurance scheme.
₹311 Crore Allocated for Cancer Care Initiative
The Odisha government has earmarked ₹311 crore for the implementation of the Mukhyamantri Cancer Care Abhiyan.
Officials said the programme was designed based on recommendations from medical experts to ensure effective treatment for different types of cancer through evidence-based healthcare packages.
The latest expansion of treatment packages is expected to further improve access to advanced cancer treatment, reduce out-of-pocket medical expenses for patients and enhance the overall quality of cancer care available under the state’s flagship health insurance programme.
The government believes the initiative will help ensure that more cancer patients receive affordable and timely treatment while strengthening Odisha’s public healthcare system.
