Odisha is set to strengthen its position in India’s emerging semiconductor industry with a proposed Rs 3,406.25-crore silicon carbide semiconductor manufacturing facility at IDCO Infovalley-II in Khordha.
The project, proposed by Tamil Nadu-based SiCSem Private Limited, has received approval from the Unit Approval Committee (UAC) of Falta Special Economic Zone (SEZ). The approval was granted during the committee’s 217th meeting.
The proposed facility will come up on more than 21.889 acres and will operate under the jurisdiction of Falta SEZ.
SiC Semiconductor Devices To Be Manufactured
The facility will focus on manufacturing silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductor devices, an advanced semiconductor technology used in applications such as electric vehicles, renewable energy systems, industrial equipment and power electronics.
The planned annual production capacity includes:
- 4.8 million SiC diodes
- 91.2 million SiC MOSFETs
The project is expected to add to India’s domestic semiconductor manufacturing capabilities and support the development of a technology-intensive industrial ecosystem in Odisha.
Rs 1,050 Crore In Government Support
The total investment in the project is estimated at Rs 3,406.25 crore.
According to the project proposal, funding will come from multiple sources. The Central Government is expected to provide Rs 700 crore as capital subsidy, while the Odisha Government will contribute Rs 350 crore. The remaining Rs 1,956.25 crore will be invested by the project promoter.
The financial support is expected to facilitate the establishment of the capital-intensive semiconductor manufacturing facility and accelerate the development of advanced electronics infrastructure in the state.
Major Export Potential
The proposed SiC facility is also expected to have a significant export-oriented component.
The project is projected to generate an export turnover of around Rs 7,043 crore over the next five years. It is also expected to generate approximately Rs 4,523 crore in net foreign exchange earnings during the same period.
The proposed production capacity and export potential could help strengthen India’s participation in the global semiconductor supply chain.
Boost To Odisha’s Semiconductor Ecosystem
The SiCSem project comes as Odisha continues to attract investments in emerging technology and advanced manufacturing sectors.
The establishment of a silicon carbide device manufacturing facility in Khordha could help create stronger linkages between semiconductor manufacturing, electronics, electric mobility, renewable energy and other high-technology industries.
The project is also expected to contribute to the development of skilled manpower and specialised industrial capabilities associated with semiconductor manufacturing.
With its proposed investment of more than Rs 3,400 crore, the SiCSem facility represents another major addition to Odisha’s growing technology and manufacturing landscape.
