Angul: National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) has entered into a technology licensing agreement with Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) for its proposed expansion of the aluminium smelter at Angul in Odisha.
Under the agreement, EGA will provide NALCO with its advanced DX+ Ultra aluminium smelting technology for the planned 0.5 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) brownfield expansion.
The agreement is part of NALCO’s broader expansion strategy to increase its aluminium production capacity and strengthen its position in the domestic and global aluminium industry.
EGA to Provide Smelting Technology and Technical Expertise
As part of the technology partnership, EGA will provide NALCO with the licence and technical know-how required to implement the DX+ Ultra smelting technology at the expanded Angul facility.
The agreement also covers the supply of designs, technical information and project-related know-how. EGA will additionally extend technical support during various stages of implementation to assist NALCO in deploying the technology.
The partnership is expected to provide NALCO access to advanced smelting technology as it proceeds with the expansion of its Angul operations.
Angul Smelter Capacity to Rise by 0.5 MTPA
The proposed brownfield project will add approximately 0.5 million tonnes of annual aluminium production capacity to NALCO’s existing smelter operations at Angul.
Following completion of the expansion, NALCO’s overall aluminium production capacity is expected to move towards around 1 million tonnes per annum.
The capacity addition is a key component of the company’s long-term growth plans and is expected to help NALCO meet rising demand for aluminium across various sectors.
Focus on Productivity and Energy Efficiency
NALCO said the DX+ Ultra technology is designed to support higher productivity while improving energy performance in aluminium smelting operations.
The technology is also expected to help optimise both capital expenditure and operating costs associated with the expanded facility.
Improved energy performance is particularly significant for the aluminium industry, where smelting is an energy-intensive process. The adoption of advanced technology could therefore contribute to more efficient production at the expanded Angul facility.
NALCO Highlights Role in India’s Aluminium Growth
NALCO Chairman and Managing Director Brijendra Pratap Singh said the adoption of advanced technology would support the company’s expansion and growth ambitions.
He also highlighted the broader significance of the project for India’s aluminium ecosystem, as increasing domestic production capacity can help support industries that rely on aluminium as a key raw material.
The agreement was signed in the presence of NALCO CMD Brijendra Pratap Singh and EGA Chief Executive Officer Abdulnasser Bin Kalban.

The planned expansion at Angul is expected to further strengthen Odisha’s position as a major hub for aluminium and related industrial activities.
