In a landmark achievement for emergency medical logistics, Indian Railways has successfully transported a live heart aboard a Vande Bharat Express for the first time, demonstrating the growing role of the national transporter in life-saving healthcare services.
The donor heart was transported from Surat to Ahmedabad on Train No. 20901 Mumbai Central–Gandhinagar Capital Vande Bharat Express before being delivered to the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre for a heart transplant.
First-Ever Organ Transport on Vande Bharat
According to a report by The New Indian Express, the highly time-sensitive mission was executed through close coordination among Indian Railways, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the Gujarat State Police, medical professionals and organ transplant coordinators.
The operation highlighted the ability of the Vande Bharat Express to support emergency healthcare missions where every minute is crucial.
Green Corridor Ensured Swift Delivery
To facilitate the rapid transfer of the donor heart, the RPF and Gujarat State Police created a dedicated Green Corridor from Platform No. 1 of Ahmedabad Railway Station to the U.N. Mehta Institute of Cardiology and Research Centre.
The seamless movement ensured the organ reached the hospital within the critical time window required for a successful transplant procedure.
Officials said the speed, punctuality and operational reliability of the Vande Bharat Express played a vital role in the success of the mission.
DRM Hails Teamwork Behind the Mission
Ahmedabad Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Ved Prakash described the operation as a proud moment for Indian Railways and praised the coordinated efforts of all agencies involved.
“The successful transport of a live heart on the Vande Bharat Express is a proud moment for Indian Railways. Every minute is crucial during such life-saving missions, and this achievement was made possible through seamless coordination among Indian Railways, the Railway Protection Force, the Gujarat State Police and medical teams,” he said.
He added that contributing to saving a human life is not merely a responsibility but a commitment to public service and humanity.

Ved Prakash said the successful operation demonstrates that Indian Railways is evolving beyond its traditional role as a passenger and freight transporter and is increasingly becoming an important partner in emergency healthcare and organ transport.
He also noted that Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has been closely monitoring Vande Bharat operations, which continue to set new benchmarks in speed, efficiency and passenger service while supporting the vision of modernising India’s railway network.
