Rainfall activity is expected to increase across Odisha ahead of the annual Rath Yatra, with weather models indicating the possible formation of a fresh low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. Meteorologists have said a cyclonic circulation is likely to develop over the Bay around July 14 or 15, which may subsequently intensify into a low-pressure system, bringing widespread rainfall to several parts of the state.
According to weather experts, the proposed weather system is expected to form over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining Odisha-West Bengal coast, where atmospheric conditions are becoming increasingly favourable for cyclogenesis. If the system develops as projected, rainfall activity across Odisha is likely to intensify from July 13 onwards, with several districts expected to receive moderate to heavy showers.
The development comes as the southwest monsoon remains active over the region. While the state has witnessed a brief reduction in rainfall intensity over the past few days, meteorologists believe the fresh weather system could revive monsoon activity and significantly influence weather conditions during the Rath Yatra period, when lakhs of devotees are expected to gather in Puri.
Light Rain And Thunderstorms Forecast Over The Next Three Days
Before the anticipated formation of the low-pressure area, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across parts of both interior and coastal Odisha over the next three days.
According to Dr Rajashree, Meteorologist at the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, a few places in the interior districts and some coastal areas are likely to receive light to moderate rain. On July 10, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are expected at one or two places in Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Angul, Sundargarh, Sambalpur, Boudh, Deogarh, Balasore, Bhadrak and Jharsuguda districts.
The IMD has also predicted gusty surface winds with speeds of 30 to 40 kmph during thunderstorm activity. Residents in the affected districts have been advised to remain alert, avoid taking shelter under trees, stay away from open fields and water bodies during lightning, and follow advisories issued by local authorities.
Fresh Weather System May Influence Rath Yatra
If the low-pressure area materialises, it is expected to strengthen monsoon currents over eastern India, resulting in enhanced rainfall across Odisha. Weather experts believe the system could bring intermittent to widespread rain during the days leading up to Rath Yatra, making continuous monitoring essential for both the administration and disaster management agencies.
Authorities are expected to closely track the movement and intensity of the system to ensure adequate preparedness for the annual festival, which attracts devotees from across India and abroad. Any significant change in the weather could influence traffic management, crowd control, and other arrangements in Puri and neighbouring districts.
No Immediate Flood Threat Despite Hirakud Water Release
Meanwhile, officials have clarified that there is no immediate flood threat despite the release of season’s first floodwater from the Hirakud Dam. Ten sluice gates of the reservoir were opened on Thursday to regulate the rising water level following increased inflow from the upper catchment areas.
The released water is expected to reach Mundali by Thursday evening. Officials said river levels have generally been receding over the past few days as rainfall intensity reduced, and the current discharge is being managed in a controlled manner. However, authorities continue to monitor downstream river systems and remain prepared for any change in the situation if fresh rainfall increases inflows into the reservoir.
Administration Monitoring Weather Developments
The Odisha government and the India Meteorological Department are keeping a close watch on the evolving weather conditions over the Bay of Bengal. While there is no confirmation yet on the exact intensity or track of the proposed low-pressure area, officials have urged the public to stay updated through official weather bulletins and follow safety advisories, particularly in districts vulnerable to thunderstorms and heavy rainfall.
With the monsoon expected to regain strength over the coming days, both weather agencies and disaster management authorities remain on alert to minimize the impact of any adverse weather conditions during the festive period.
