Outgoing Chief of the Army Staff General Upendra Dwivedi formally handed over the leadership of the Indian Army to General Dhiraj Seth on Tuesday, bringing to a close a distinguished military career spanning more than four decades. In an emotional farewell, General Dwivedi described serving the nation in uniform as the “greatest privilege” of his life and expressed confidence that his successor would lead the Army to greater heights.
Before relinquishing office, General Dwivedi paid homage to the nation’s fallen heroes by laying a wreath at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. The solemn ceremony was attended by senior military officials, veterans, and dignitaries.
A Farewell Marked by Gratitude
Addressing officers and personnel during the farewell ceremony, General Dwivedi reflected on his journey from a student at Sainik School to becoming the country’s Army Chief.
“As I conclude my tenure as the Chief of the Army Staff, I am filled with a profound sense of humility, gratitude, pride, and satisfaction. The journey from Sainik School to this moment has been unforgettable. Serving in the Indian Army for over four decades has been the greatest privilege of my life,” he said.
He thanked soldiers, veterans, their families, and the people of India for their unwavering support, emphasizing that the Army’s strength lies not in any single individual but in the collective dedication and sacrifice of its personnel.
General Dwivedi also paid tribute to the brave soldiers who laid down their lives in the line of duty, saying their sacrifice would forever remain a source of inspiration for the nation.
Army Maintained High Operational Readiness
Reviewing the Army’s achievements during his tenure, General Dwivedi said the force had maintained a high level of preparedness, balance, and vigilance across all operational fronts over the past two years.
He highlighted the successful execution of Operation Snow Leopard along the northern borders, describing it as a testament to the Army’s readiness and resilience in safeguarding India’s frontiers.
On the western front, he referred to Operation Sindoor as another example of the Army’s professionalism, discipline, and measured response while fulfilling its responsibilities under challenging circumstances.
According to the outgoing Army Chief, these operations demonstrated the force’s ability to respond effectively to evolving security challenges while maintaining operational excellence.
Focus on Joint Military Operations
General Dwivedi also underscored the growing cooperation among the Indian Army, Indian Navy, and Indian Air Force, stating that enhanced jointness has become a defining feature of India’s national security strategy.
He noted that future warfare would increasingly rely on integrated theatre commands and coordinated operations among the three services.
“Our direction is clear—to look together, decide together, and act together,” he said, stressing that greater interoperability and mutual trust among the armed forces would remain essential in addressing emerging security challenges.
He added that the strengthened synergy between the services has contributed to shaping what he described as India’s “new normal” in national security preparedness.
Confidence in the New Army Chief
Handing over command to General Dhiraj Seth, General Dwivedi expressed full confidence in his successor’s leadership and experience.
He described General Seth as a seasoned soldier and capable military leader who possesses the vision and professionalism needed to guide the Army through future challenges while preserving its rich traditions and operational standards.
“I have full confidence that under his leadership, the Indian Army will scale even greater heights while upholding its glorious traditions, professionalism, and resolve,” General Dwivedi said.
He added that the Army would continue to remain rooted in its core values while staying vigilant against evolving threats and fully prepared to respond to any future contingencies.
