Indian Coast Guard Rescues Six Fishermen Off Mangaluru Coast

Mangaluru: The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) successfully rescued six fishermen from a distressed Indian Fishing Boat (IFB) Manju Matha during a challenging search and rescue (SAR) operation off the Karnataka coast on Monday evening. The operation, carried out amid rough sea conditions, showcased the Coast Guard’s swift response, advanced rescue capabilities, and commitment to safeguarding lives at sea.

According to an official statement issued by the Indian Coast Guard, the rescue mission began at around 4:00 p.m. after Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sachet intercepted a distress call over VHF radio from the fishing vessel, which was located nearly 33 nautical miles off the Suratkal coast.

Distress Call Triggered Immediate Response

The fishing boat reported severe flooding after sustaining hull damage due to rough sea conditions. With water rapidly entering the vessel, the lives of all six crew members were in immediate danger.

Upon receiving the distress signal, the Coast Guard diverted ICGS Sachet from its operational patrol and proceeded at full speed toward the distressed boat. The rescue vessel reached the location within approximately 90 minutes, despite adverse weather conditions.

Rescue Amid Rough Seas

The search and rescue operation was conducted under extremely challenging circumstances. Rough seas, strong winds, poor visibility, and fading daylight significantly increased the complexity of the mission, requiring exceptional coordination and seamanship from the Coast Guard personnel.

Despite the difficult conditions, the crew of ICGS Sachet executed the rescue operation with precision and professionalism, ensuring the safety of all those on board the damaged fishing vessel.

Advanced Technology Aided Rescue

To safely recover the stranded fishermen, the Coast Guard deployed remote-operated lifebuoys, specially designed for rescue operations in adverse weather and turbulent sea conditions.

Supported by advanced rescue equipment and extensive operational training, the team successfully evacuated all six fishermen without any injuries. By around 6:00 p.m., every crew member had been safely brought aboard the Coast Guard ship.

The rescued fishermen were provided immediate assistance before the vessel proceeded toward New Mangalore Port, where they will be safely disembarked and the necessary post-rescue formalities completed.

Commitment to Maritime Safety

The successful operation once again underlined the Indian Coast Guard’s preparedness to respond swiftly to maritime emergencies and protect lives at sea.

Officials said the rescue highlighted the effective combination of modern rescue technology, well-trained personnel, and seamless coordination in handling emergencies under demanding conditions.

The Coast Guard continues to maintain constant surveillance across India’s maritime zones, ensuring timely assistance to fishermen, commercial vessels, and other seafarers facing distress.

‘Vayam Rakshamah’ in Action

Reaffirming its motto, “Vayam Rakshamah” (We Protect), the Indian Coast Guard said it remains committed to ensuring maritime safety, protecting the country’s coastal waters, and providing rapid assistance during emergencies.

The rescue of all six fishermen from IFB Manju Matha stands as another example of the force’s dedication to saving lives, even in the face of severe weather and challenging operational conditions.
