A major tragedy unfolded in Kolkata on Wednesday after an under-construction private warehouse collapsed in the Taratala area of West Kolkata, trapping dozens of labourers beneath tonnes of concrete and steel debris. Authorities have launched a large-scale rescue operation involving multiple agencies as efforts continue to locate and save those still believed to be trapped.
According to police officials, the warehouse structure, spread across several hundred square metres, suddenly gave way between 12:30 pm and 1:00 pm. At the time of the collapse, a large number of workers were reportedly engaged in construction activities inside the premises.
Initial reports indicate that at least 40 labourers may have been trapped under the rubble when the structure came crashing down. The exact number of workers present at the site is still being verified by authorities.
Multi-Agency Rescue Operation in Progress
Immediately after the incident, emergency services rushed to the site and launched an extensive rescue mission. Teams from the Kolkata Police, the Indian Army, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations.
Heavy machinery, including cranes, excavators, and gas cutters, is being used to carefully remove steel beams, concrete slabs, and other debris without endangering survivors who may still be trapped underneath.
Rescue personnel are working against time as they attempt to reach those buried beneath the collapsed structure. Officials said the operation is highly challenging due to the volume of debris and concerns about further structural instability.
Several Workers Rescued, Hospitalised
By around 3:00 pm, rescue teams had successfully pulled out 13 labourers from the wreckage. The injured workers were immediately shifted to the state-run SSKM Hospital for treatment.
Medical teams remain on standby as authorities expect additional survivors to be recovered from the site. The condition of the rescued workers has not yet been officially disclosed.
Ministers Visit Site, Monitor Rescue Efforts
Senior state government officials reached the accident site soon after receiving information about the collapse. Urban Development Minister Agnimitra Paul and Health Minister Dr. Sharadwat Mukherjee personally inspected the rescue operations and reviewed emergency response measures.
Officials are coordinating with rescue agencies to ensure that all available resources are utilised for the ongoing operation.
Questions Raised Over Construction Safety
The collapse has once again raised serious concerns regarding building safety standards and regulatory oversight at construction sites.
Reacting to the incident, Minister of State for Youth and Sports Services Dr. Indranil Khan said that attention must first remain focused on saving lives before determining accountability.
“The illegal constructions were allowed by the former government. However, this is not the time to focus on blame. Our immediate priority is to rescue those trapped under the debris and provide all possible assistance to the affected families,” he said.
Investigation Likely After Rescue Operations
Authorities are expected to launch a detailed investigation into the cause of the collapse once rescue operations are completed. Structural experts and civic authorities may examine whether construction norms, safety regulations, and building approvals were properly followed.
The incident has triggered widespread concern among residents and labour organisations, with many demanding stricter monitoring of under-construction buildings to prevent similar accidents in the future.
As rescue efforts continue, families of the trapped workers remain gathered near the site, anxiously awaiting updates on their loved ones.
