Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday issued a weather warning for multiple districts across Odisha, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall in several regions. The weather agency has urged residents to remain cautious as active monsoon conditions continue to influence weather patterns across the state.
According to the latest forecast from the Regional Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar, districts including Balasore, Bhadrak, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Kandhamal, Rayagada, and Koraput are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong surface winds reaching speeds of 40 to 50 kmph at isolated locations. Heavy rainfall is also expected in parts of these districts, increasing the possibility of localized waterlogging and temporary disruptions.
Yellow Warning for 15 Districts
The IMD has also issued a Yellow Warning for Bargarh, Sambalpur, Sonepur, Balangir, Nuapada, Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Gajapati, Ganjam, Nayagarh, Khordha, Puri, Cuttack, and Jajpur districts.
These districts are likely to witness thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds ranging between 30 and 40 kmph during the day. Moderate rainfall activity is also expected in many areas under the influence of the active southwest monsoon.
Meteorologists stated that the ongoing monsoon circulation and moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal are contributing to widespread rainfall and unstable weather conditions across Odisha.
IMD Advises Caution
In view of the forecast, the weather department has advised residents to avoid open spaces during thunderstorms and seek shelter in safe locations. People have also been cautioned against standing under trees or near electric poles during lightning activity.
The IMD has specifically urged farmers, fishermen, construction workers, and individuals engaged in outdoor activities to remain vigilant and monitor weather updates regularly.
Authorities have also been asked to stay prepared for possible weather-related incidents, especially in districts expected to receive heavy rainfall and strong winds.
Monsoon Remains Active Across Odisha
Several parts of Odisha have been witnessing intermittent rainfall over the past few days following the advancement of the southwest monsoon into the state. The rainfall has brought relief from the summer heat in many regions, although humid conditions continue to persist in some coastal districts.
Weather officials indicated that rainfall activity is likely to continue in various parts of Odisha over the next few days, with occasional thunderstorms and lightning remaining a possibility.
Residents are advised to follow official weather advisories and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety during adverse weather conditions.
