A newly constructed air concourse featuring convenience stalls, lounges and seating areas has been opened to passengers at Bhubaneswar railway station, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing modernization of railway infrastructure in Odisha.
The air concourse, which connects the station’s two newly built terminal buildings, is a key feature of the redevelopment project. According to reports, the combined cost of redevelopment works at Bhubaneswar, Puri and Cuttack railway stations is estimated at around ₹905.5 crore.
Bhubaneswar Project Nearing Completion
The Bhubaneswar railway station redevelopment is the largest project under the East Coast Railway (ECoR) zone. As of May, the project had achieved nearly 86 per cent physical progress and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
The upgraded station is being developed as an energy-efficient green building and will include modern passenger amenities such as:
- Infant care and specialised toilet facilities
- Tourist information centre
- Food court and cloakroom
- VIP lounges and dormitories
- Booking counters
- Electric vehicle charging stations
Puri Station Upgrade Progresses
The redevelopment of Puri railway station has reached approximately 78 per cent completion. Designed to cater to the growing number of pilgrims and tourists, the project includes the renovation of all eight platforms.
Key facilities planned at the station include:
- Baggage scanners
- Multi-bed dormitories
- Baby feeding rooms
- Retiring rooms
- Paid lounges
- TTE rest rooms
- Centralised CCTV monitoring system
The station’s design will also reflect Odisha’s cultural and spiritual heritage through traditional architectural elements, including decorative bell-inspired motifs.
Focus On Accessibility
Following a recent inspection, Odisha Governor Haribabu Kambhampati directed officials to ensure that the Puri station redevelopment is completed and fully operational before the 2027 Rath Yatra.
Both Bhubaneswar and Puri stations are being developed as barrier-free facilities with ramps, non-slip walkways, accessible toilets and dedicated parking spaces for persons with disabilities, ensuring a more inclusive travel experience for all passengers.
