In a tragic incident, five Indian Air Force (IAF) personnel lost their lives after an AN-32 transport aircraft crashed at Roureah Air Force Station in Assam’s Jorhat district on Saturday. The accident occurred within the premises of the strategically important air base during a flight operation, officials confirmed.
The co-pilot of the aircraft survived the crash and is currently undergoing medical treatment. His condition has not yet been officially disclosed.
Crash Occurred During Landing
According to initial reports, the AN-32 transport aircraft was flying from Arunachal Pradesh to Jorhat when it met with an accident during landing. Emergency response teams were rushed to the crash site immediately after the incident, and rescue operations were launched without delay.
The Indian Air Force has ordered a Court of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances leading to the crash and determine the exact cause of the accident.

Roureah Air Force Station is one of the Indian Air Force’s key installations in Northeast India and plays a crucial role in logistics, troop movement and operational support in the region, particularly along India’s eastern frontier.

The Antonov An-32 has served as one of the IAF’s primary transport aircraft since its induction in 1986. The aircraft is widely used for logistics, troop transportation, supply missions and operations in high-altitude and remote regions.
Despite undergoing upgrades over the years, the AN-32 fleet has been involved in several accidents during its long service history. However, it continues to remain a critical component of the Air Force’s transport capabilities.

The crash comes just months after a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed during a routine training mission in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district, highlighting ongoing concerns surrounding military aviation safety and operational challenges.
