The Raja festival in Odisha is expected to be celebrated amid widespread rainfall this year, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting the arrival of the southwest monsoon in the state within the next two to three days.
According to the IMD, pre-monsoon showers and Kalbaisakhi (nor’wester) activity are already active across several parts of Odisha and are likely to continue in the coming days. The advancing monsoon system, combined with ongoing thunderstorm activity, is expected to bring enhanced rainfall during the Raja festivities.
The weather department has stated that there will be no major change in daytime temperatures over the next three days. However, temperatures are likely to fall slightly thereafter, providing relief from the intense heat and humid conditions experienced across many districts in recent weeks.
Yellow Warning Issued Across Odisha
In view of the prevailing weather conditions, the Meteorological Centre has issued a Yellow Warning for all districts of Odisha. The forecast indicates the likelihood of:
- Rainfall across several districts
- Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning
- Gusty surface winds reaching 30–40 kmph
- Localized weather disruptions in vulnerable areas
Weather officials have advised residents to remain cautious during thunderstorm activity, particularly in areas prone to lightning strikes and strong winds.
Advisory for Public and Farmers
The IMD has urged:
- Farmers to protect harvested crops and monitor forecasts regularly
- Outdoor workers to avoid open spaces during lightning activity
- Commuters to exercise caution while travelling during thunderstorms
- Residents to stay updated with official weather advisories
Monsoon Set to Enter Odisha Soon
Meteorologists have indicated that atmospheric conditions remain favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into Odisha within the next few days. The continuing influence of Kalbaisakhi is expected to support this progression, resulting in intermittent rain and thunderstorm activity until at least June 15.
The arrival of the monsoon is expected to bring more widespread and sustained rainfall across the state, marking the transition from pre-monsoon weather to the rainy season.
As Odisha prepares for Raja Parba, residents can look forward to cooler weather and much-needed relief from the summer heat, though celebrations may be accompanied by rain, thunderstorms and cloudy skies across many parts of the state.
