Odisha and Tottori Prefecture are set to establish a sister-state partnership following high-level discussions between Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and Japan’s Consul General in Kolkata, Ishikawa Yoshihisa, in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday.
The proposed partnership is expected to strengthen cooperation between Odisha and Japan across multiple sectors including trade, industry, tourism, technology, education and cultural exchange.
Odisha And Tottori To Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation
According to an official statement, both sides agreed to work closely as “sister states” and promote long-term collaboration through exchange programmes and strategic partnerships.
High-level delegations from Odisha and Tottori Prefecture are expected to undertake mutual visits in the coming months as part of the initiative.
The formal declaration of the sister-state partnership is likely to be jointly announced later by Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi and the Governor of Tottori Prefecture.
Focus On Trade, Investment And Industrial Growth
During the discussions, the Odisha Chief Minister acknowledged Japan’s continued support towards the state’s development initiatives and expressed optimism regarding increased Japanese investment in Odisha’s industrial and infrastructure sectors.
Majhi reportedly invited greater Japanese participation in Odisha’s growing industrial ecosystem, particularly in sectors linked to manufacturing, technology and sustainable development.
The meeting also explored opportunities for collaboration in innovation-driven industries and academic exchange programmes between institutions in Odisha and Japan.
Tourism And Cultural Heritage Discussed
Tourism emerged as another major area of cooperation during the talks.
Both sides discussed promoting Odisha’s Buddhist heritage sites, temples and natural attractions among Japanese tourists.
Officials noted that Odisha and Japan already share strong historical and cultural connections, particularly through Buddhist traditions, art and heritage.
The Japanese envoy highlighted the deep-rooted cultural ties between the two regions and reaffirmed Japan’s interest in expanding socio-economic and cultural collaboration with Odisha.
Employment Opportunities For Odia Youth In Japan
In a significant development, Japanese recruitment agencies are expected to visit Odisha soon to explore employment opportunities for skilled youth from the state in Japan.
The initiative is expected to create overseas job pathways for Odia candidates across multiple sectors, potentially strengthening workforce cooperation between the two sides.
