MoRTH Approves Rs 544 Crore Bypass Projects For Bhubaneswar Region To Ease Traffic Congestion

In a major boost to road infrastructure and regional connectivity in Odisha, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has approved three bypass road projects worth Rs 544 crore for the Bhubaneswar parliamentary constituency. The projects are aimed at reducing growing traffic congestion and improving connectivity between Bhubaneswar and surrounding semi-urban and rural areas.

Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi announced on Tuesday that the sanctioned projects include bypass corridors at Rajasunakhala, Begunia and the Pubusahi–Sarua–Taratua stretch. Together, the projects will cover nearly 18 kilometres and are expected to resolve several long-standing traffic bottlenecks affecting commuters in the region.

Three Major Bypass Corridors Sanctioned

According to the MP, the Rajasunakhala bypass project has been approved at an estimated cost of Rs 156 crore, while the Begunia bypass has received sanction worth Rs 118 crore. The largest among the three projects, the Pubusahi–Sarua–Taratua bypass corridor, has been approved at a cost of Rs 270 crore.

The projects are expected to significantly improve movement of vehicles on busy connecting roads that frequently witness traffic congestion due to increasing urban expansion and rising vehicular movement in and around Bhubaneswar.

Sarangi stated that she had personally requested Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari to approve the bypass projects after highlighting the persistent traffic problems faced by commuters in these areas.

She said the proposals have now received formal approval and are expected to move to the tendering and execution stage soon.

Focus On Decongestion And Better Connectivity

The upcoming bypass roads are being viewed as strategically important infrastructure projects for the region. Once completed, they are expected to divert heavy and through traffic away from densely populated areas, helping reduce travel time and congestion on existing roads.

The projects are also likely to improve transportation access for nearby villages and semi-urban pockets, while strengthening connectivity between Bhubaneswar and adjoining regions of Khordha district.

Sarangi said the implementation process would be monitored closely to ensure timely completion of the projects. Reiterating her development-focused approach, she said infrastructure growth and public service remain her primary priorities.

The approval of the bypass corridors comes at a time when Bhubaneswar and nearby areas are witnessing rapid urbanisation and increasing demand for improved transport infrastructure to support economic growth and smoother mobility.
