Odisha Govt Plans 4 Alternative Routes to Ease Cuttack–Bhubaneswar Traffic Congestion

Bhubaneswar: In a major infrastructure push, the Odisha government has proposed developing four alternative routes to decongest the busy corridor between Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, aiming to improve connectivity and streamline traffic flow across the twin cities.

Announcing the plan, Odisha Works Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan said the absence of multiple entry points has long contributed to recurring traffic bottlenecks. He added that all administrative approvals for the project have been secured and work is expected to begin soon.

“The development of alternative entry routes will play a crucial role in managing congestion. We are focused on creating better access points to both cities to ensure smoother movement,” the minister stated.

Ring Road to Boost Regional Connectivity

In addition to the new routes, the government is planning a comprehensive ring road connecting Puri, Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, and Khordha. This project is expected to redistribute traffic load, reduce pressure on existing roads, and enhance overall regional connectivity.

Second Bridge Over Kathajodi River

Further strengthening the infrastructure push, the Odisha Cabinet has approved the construction of a second bridge over the Kathajodi River. The new bridge is aimed at easing vehicular movement and reducing congestion in key transit points between the two cities.

Addressing Urban Traffic Challenges

Highlighting recent traffic issues, Harichandan noted that congestion in Bhubaneswar was largely due to the lack of alternative routes. The upcoming projects are designed to address this gap by creating multiple entry and exit points.

Once completed, these initiatives are expected to significantly improve traffic management, reduce travel time, and support the growing urban infrastructure needs of Odisha’s twin cities.
