SJTA to Standardise Jagannath Traditions Globally with Official Srimandir Calendar & Ritual Guidelines

Puri: In a major step towards preserving and standardising age-old traditions, the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA) has decided to distribute the official Srimandir calendar and detailed ritual guidelines to Jagannath temples across India and abroad. The initiative aims to ensure uniform observance of rituals and prevent deviations during key festivals, especially the world-renowned Rath Yatra.

The decision was finalised during a high-level meeting chaired by Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, the chief servitor of the Shree Jagannath Temple. Officials stated that a comprehensive framework based on the temple’s centuries-old traditions will be prepared and circulated among Jagannath temples worldwide.

Uniform Ritual Practices Across Temples

The proposed guidelines will provide an in-depth outline of rituals, customs, daily practices, and festival procedures followed at Srimandir in Puri. This move is expected to help temples outside Odisha align their practices with the original traditions of Lord Jagannath, thereby maintaining authenticity and cultural integrity.

The initiative also comes in response to growing concerns over inconsistencies in ritual observances in various Jagannath temples, particularly during major festivals.

Global Outreach Through Digital Texts

In a parallel effort to expand awareness about Jagannath culture, the sacred text Purushottama Mahatmya from the Skanda Purana has already been translated into English. Authorities plan to further digitise and publish the text in multiple languages, including Odia, Hindi, English, and Sanskrit.

This multilingual digital initiative is expected to enhance global understanding of Lord Jagannath traditions and highlight the spiritual significance of Shreekhetra, the sacred land of Puri.

Gundicha Temple Beautification in Full Swing

Meanwhile, preparations for the upcoming Rath Yatra are gaining momentum. The cultural and project technical sub-committee has directed that beautification and renovation work at the Gundicha Temple be completed well in advance of the annual festival.

Puri Collector Dibya Jyoti Parida confirmed that efforts are underway to ensure timely completion of all pending works. “We are working to finish the renovation ahead of Rath Yatra and are hopeful of completing it much before the festival begins,” he said.

Strengthening Cultural Identity

This initiative by SJTA marks a significant move towards preserving the sanctity and uniformity of Jagannath traditions across the globe. By combining traditional knowledge with modern digital outreach, the administration aims to strengthen cultural identity while making Jagannath heritage more accessible to devotees worldwide.
