A temple believed by local residents to be the Gangadevi Temple has reappeared along the seashore at Podampeta in Odisha’s Ganjam district, nearly 25 years after it was reportedly buried beneath sand and engulfed by the advancing sea.
The unexpected appearance of the temple’s spire has drawn considerable attention from local residents, with people gathering at the site to witness the structure emerging from beneath the sand.
Temple Remains Buried For Nearly 25 Years
According to local residents, the temple had remained hidden for around two and a half decades. They said the structure was reportedly engulfed by the sea before its consecration as the surrounding coastal area gradually became submerged.
The locality where the temple once stood was reportedly home to a settlement. Over the years, coastal changes caused the area to disappear beneath the sea and sand, leaving the temple structure buried.
With the sea receding from the area recently, parts of the temple began becoming visible again.
Spire And Dadhinauti Visible
The emergence of the temple has created considerable curiosity among people in the area. Residents rushed to the seashore after noticing the structure, with portions of the temple now visible above the sand.
The temple’s Dadhinauti, an architectural element located near the top of a traditional Odia temple, could also reportedly be seen.
A local resident said the sight of the temple emerging after so many years came as a surprise and attracted a large gathering at the location.
Locals Seek Detailed Investigation
While residents believe the structure is the Gangadevi Temple, its exact history, age and architectural significance have not yet been officially established.
Some locals have claimed that the temple could be of considerable antiquity. However, they said a proper assessment by government authorities and experts would be necessary to determine when the temple was built and understand its historical importance.
The reappearance of the structure has therefore raised interest not only among local residents but also over the need to document and investigate the remains.
