IAF Trainer Aircraft Crashes Near Tambaram in Chennai; Pilot Ejects Safely, Inquiry Launched

Chennai: An Indian Air Force (IAF) training aircraft crashed near Tambaram in Chennai’s Chengalpattu district on Saturday afternoon, prompting an immediate response from defence authorities. The aircraft, identified as a Pilatus PC-7 Mk II, was conducting a routine training mission when it met with the accident around 2:25 pm.

Officials confirmed that the pilot acted swiftly and ejected safely moments before the crash, preventing any injuries or casualties. Initial visuals from the site showed pieces of the aircraft scattered across an open area as locals gathered around the debris.

In an official statement released on X (formerly Twitter), the Indian Air Force confirmed the incident and assured that there was no damage to civilian life or property.

“An Indian Air Force PC-7 Mk II trainer aircraft met with an accident during a routine training mission and crashed at about 1425 Hr near Tambaram, Chennai, today. The pilot ejected safely, and no damage to civil property has been reported. A Court of Inquiry has been constituted to ascertain the cause of accident,” the statement read.

Rescue teams and IAF personnel quickly reached the crash location to secure the area and begin preliminary assessment. The cause of the crash remains unknown, and a detailed investigation has been ordered to determine whether technical issues or other factors were involved.

The Pilatus PC-7 Mk II is widely used for basic training of IAF cadets and is known for its strong safety record. Saturday’s incident has brought renewed focus on aircraft maintenance and safety protocols during training missions.
