Air power has always been a defining factor in global military dominance, shaping warfare strategies since the early 20th century. According to the latest data from Global Firepower 2025 and the World Directory of Modern Military Aviation (WDMMA), the Indian Air Force (IAF) has emerged as the third most powerful air force in the world, surpassing China in overall strength and capability.
The report highlights that the United States continues to maintain unparalleled air superiority, accounting for nearly 40% of global military expenditure, followed by Russia in second place. India now ranks just behind these two major powers, while China has fallen to fourth. Pakistan does not feature in the top 10.
Global Air Power Rankings 2025
The WDMMA 2025 rankings assess 103 countries and 129 air services, including army, navy, and marine aviation branches, covering over 48,000 aircraft worldwide.
India achieved a Total Value Rating (TVR) of 69.4, placing it ahead of China’s 63.8 TVR. The US Air Force leads the list with a TVR of 242.9, followed by the Russian Air Force with 142.4.
However, if the four US branches — Air Force, Army, Navy, and Marine Corps — are considered separately, India officially ranks sixth. But when combined as one entity, the Indian Air Force stands third globally, right behind the US and Russia.
India’s Strategic Strength
The Indian Air Force has showcased its growing might through advanced technology, operational readiness, and indigenous defence manufacturing. Its successful performance during Operation Sindoor, where it reportedly outmaneuvered Chinese aircraft, has reaffirmed its dominance across the Indian subcontinent.
India’s growing air capabilities are also driven by modern acquisitions like the Rafale fighter jets, Tejas Mk-1A, C-17 Globemaster III, and Apache helicopters, alongside an expanding focus on unmanned aerial systems (UAS) and air defence networks.
Global Military Spending at Record High
According to the SIPRI 2023 report, global military spending reached a record $2.44 trillion, marking a 6.8% rise over the previous year. Ongoing conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and tensions in the Middle East and Indo-Pacific have driven nations to ramp up their air defence capabilities.
Why the US Still Leads
The United States maintains its top spot due to its massive industrial base, dedicated strategic bombers, large multi-role fighter fleet, global reach transport aircraft, and advanced refuelling and reconnaissance capabilities. Its air power is unmatched, with a continuous focus on next-generation systems like the B-21 Raider, F-35 Lightning II, and advanced drone warfare platforms.
