Bhubaneswar, August 7, 2025 — On the occasion of National Handloom Day, the Odisha government launched a landmark initiative named ‘EKTA’ at Janata Maidan, Bhubaneswar, to revamp the handloom sector and foster cooperative development across the state.
Chief Minister Mohan Majhi led the event and announced a series of transformative steps aimed at positioning Odisha’s handloom industry on the global map. Bollywood actress and cultural icon Madhuri Dixit has been appointed as the brand ambassador of Odisha Handloom for one year, to help promote the state’s rich textile traditions both in India and abroad.
Key Highlights of the EKTA Initiative
Strategic Investment & Employment
The state signed 33 MoUs worth ₹7,808 crore, which are expected to create over 35,000 jobs, opening new avenues for weavers, designers, and textile entrepreneurs.
Strict Action Against Counterfeits
In a major policy shift, the government announced stringent actions against those producing duplicate handloom products, including legal proceedings and arrests. This aims to protect the authenticity of Odisha’s traditional weaves.
Cultural & Economic Revival
Chief Minister Majhi stressed that handloom is more than a sector — it is a symbol of Odia identity and pride.
“Reviving Odia identity is our responsibility,” he said, linking handloom to both cultural heritage and economic empowerment.
Global Demand for Odisha Handloom
Odisha’s handloom products are gaining international recognition, with exports to countries like France, Japan, USA, and Singapore. Local weavers are now participating in global expos, reflecting the growing global demand for traditional Indian textiles.
Youth-Centric Programs
To engage the next generation, the EKTA initiative will launch fellowships and internships in the handloom sector, encouraging young minds to innovate and preserve traditional weaving techniques.
Infrastructure Development
Six textile parks will be developed across Odisha to provide world-class facilities for design, production, and marketing of handloom products.
Public Participation: Swadeshi Movement Revived
The state urged citizens to wear handloom at least once a week as a gesture of support for indigenous craftsmanship and to revive the Swadeshi spirit.
National Context: Handloom Sector Growth
Since the celebration of National Handloom Day began in 2015, India has seen over ₹150 crore in Khadi and handloom sales, a 315% jump in sales, and a 400% increase in production. The sector has recorded an 81% rise in employment nationwide, underlining its role in inclusive economic growth.
With 1.3 lakh weavers across 30 districts, Odisha’s EKTA initiative is a visionary push to empower artisans, preserve cultural identity, and boost the rural economy.
