Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Food Supplies and Consumer Welfare Department has stepped up monitoring of potato and onion stocks in the capital city following a noticeable rise in the prices of the two essential kitchen commodities.
Officials on Thursday carried out inspections at several potato and onion godowns in Aiginia, one of Bhubaneswar’s major wholesale vegetable markets. The exercise was aimed at assessing stock availability, checking wholesale prices and determining whether the commodities are being sold in accordance with applicable norms.
Stock Position Under Government Scanner
During the inspection, officials examined the quantity of potatoes and onions stored at different godowns. They also checked the prices at which traders were supplying the commodities to the market.
Authorities are comparing wholesale rates with prices prevailing in the retail market to understand the reasons behind the recent increase in consumer prices.
A senior department official said the inspection was prompted by concerns over rising potato and onion prices in Bhubaneswar. The department is examining whether the available stock is adequate to meet market demand and whether there is any substantial difference between godown prices and retail rates.
Officials are also expected to assess the storage practices followed by traders and verify compliance with relevant regulations.
Aiginia Market Key to Vegetable Supply
The Aiginia potato market plays an important role in supplying vegetables to Bhubaneswar and surrounding areas. Any change in wholesale availability or prices at the market can therefore have a direct impact on retail prices paid by consumers.
The latest inspections are expected to give the government a clearer picture of the stock position and pricing pattern in the wholesale market. Based on the findings, authorities may consider further measures to prevent unreasonable price increases and ensure adequate supply.
Flood Situation Adds to Vegetable Price Pressure
The government’s action comes against the backdrop of a broader increase in vegetable prices across Odisha. Persistent rainfall and flooding in several parts of the state have disrupted agricultural activities, affected crops and created challenges for transportation and supply chains.
In Rourkela, onion prices have reportedly reached around Rs 50 per kilogram, while several other vegetables have also crossed the Rs 50 mark.
Brinjal, pointed gourd, cauliflower, beans, ivy gourd, spiny gourd and beetroot are among the vegetables being sold at elevated prices. Tomatoes have been selling at around Rs 30-40 per kilogram.
The increase has reportedly been observed in several other cities and towns across the state as well.
Consumers Feel the Pinch
The rising prices are putting additional pressure on household budgets, particularly at a time when flood-related disruptions are affecting normal life in several parts of Odisha.
Rourkela resident Laxmipriya Das said vegetable shortages and higher prices were forcing families to adjust their purchases according to availability.
With supply constraints continuing in parts of the state, consumers will be watching closely for any improvement in wholesale availability and retail prices.
The inspection of Aiginia godowns is therefore expected to help authorities determine whether the price rise is primarily linked to genuine supply shortages or whether other factors are contributing to the higher rates.
