World Elephant Day 2026: Nandankanan Celebrates With Special Treats for Elephants

Bhubaneswar: World Elephant Day 2026 is being observed at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar on Wednesday with special arrangements for the elephants. As part of the celebrations, the jumbos were served fruits and other food items at the zoo.

World Elephant Day is observed every year on August 12 to raise awareness about elephant conservation, habitat protection and the challenges faced by the species.

Special Food for Nandankanan Elephants

The World Elephant Day celebrations at Nandankanan included special feeding arrangements for the elephants. Fruits and other treats were provided as part of activities highlighting elephant care and welfare.

Nandankanan Zoological Park currently houses four female elephants — Basanti, Hira, Lisa and Asha.

The zoo has previously marked World Elephant Day with special feeding sessions and enrichment activities designed to promote the well-being of its elephants.

Awareness and Elephant Conservation

The annual observance aims to highlight the importance of protecting elephants and preserving their natural habitats.

Nandankanan has also conducted awareness programmes, quizzes and interactive activities involving students and visitors on previous occasions to spread the message of elephant conservation.

The World Elephant Day programme at Nandankanan serves as an opportunity to encourage greater public awareness about protecting one of the world’s most iconic and ecologically important animals.
